Mannar Mathai (Innocent) is now running a drama group under Urvashi Theatres. The lead actors in this troupe, Gopalakrishnan (Mukesh) and Balakrishnan (Saikumar), always fights with each other for the lead role in the drama. During Urvashi Theatre's first stage show, Gopalakrishnan was supposed to act like slapping the heroine, but he ends up slapping her for real, and hard. The film is about Daniel Thompson, a saxophone player who is a mute witness to many of the historical happenings taking place around in the world. The film traces the life of this character up to his seventy third year and comments upon many things that may have social and political relevance. Dany as he is known, was born on the day of the Dandi Salt March. His wife leaves him on the day the first Communist Government of Kerala loses power. Dany's love, disappointments, triumphs everything coincides with historical events. Dany dons many roles in life. He sings in the church. Then he becomes a saxophone player. He marry Margaret, daughter of a rich man named Chavero when the old man ask him to save the honor of their family. Margaret is pregnant and her lover has died. But with the passage of time, Dany is abandoned by all and he finds himself destined to lead a desolate existence. He ends up in a hospital. And it is here that he meets Bhargavi Amma, a retired professor, who is also desolate after the death of her daughter and after being totally isolated in life. Dany and Bhargavi Amma develop an intimacy and they travel back together from the hospital. But Dany passes away on the way. Anyhow Bhargavi Amma decides to perform the funeral rites in the Christian manner in the compound of her house, a house of orthodox Hindus. This creates certain problems, but Bhargavi Amma decides to dare all such problems.

Meera is a club dancer in the dark streets of Mumbai, who like all performers of Mumbai, aspires to be on the screen someday. She gets used by film producers who promise her roles in their films, but fail to do so later. Frustrated, she even thinks of ending her life. But the unexpected arrival of Shyam, a taxi driver, changes the course of her life. He marries her and makes for a lovely husband. But, on the day of the preview of her debut film, Shyam is involved in a fatal road accident and declared brain dead. Meera who is left all alone again, thinks of donating Shyam’s organs to people in need. She wants to have his child through artificial insemination. She fights for her parenting rights as the technique would have created much uproar in the media.

Vishnu (Kunchacko Boban), Pappan (Prathap Pothen) and Louis (Biju Menon) are three ex-convicts who live together at Pappan's abode, trying to pick up from where they had let their lives off before being jailed. After many unsuccessful efforts to find employment, they appeal to Dr. Isaac (Narain), who was a counsellor in the prison. He suggests that they consider some form of self-employment and he will support them. Vishnu converts Pappan's Omni into an ambulance. Pappan runs a playschool and Louis works for a driving school run by a neighbour, Grace (Anjana Menon), a widow. But Dr. Isaac has some other intentions in supporting them and this forms the crux of the story.

The location of the story is Spain, and hence the name of the movie. The story revolves around Charlie (Dileep), an illegal immigrant stranded in Madrid. To make things worse, he is conversant only in Malayalam. He gets a job as a cook in an Indian restaurant,as he has some experience in running a roadside eatery in his homeland, run by an expatriate, Majid. In the restaurant he is assigned with the task of serving up various types of dosas and, he comes up with a local variant named Spanish Masala. This turns out to be his passport to employment in the home of an ex-diplomat, who had earlier served in India. Here he meets the diplomat's daughter Camilla (Daniela Zacherl), who is visually impaired. She becomes a big time fan of Charlie's Spanish Masala. She is not on talking terms with her father, who is believed to have killed her Indian lover, Rahul (Kunchacko Boban), the son of her Malayali nanny, from whom she has learnt to speak Malayalam. Later Camilla starts to get closer to Charlie. Since he can imitate anyone's voice, one servant Pappan (Nelson) leads him to imitate Rahul's voice and keep Rahul's memory alive. After sometime, she recovers and starts seeing everything, but to see her, her dad is no more. A strange incident occurs when Rahul arrives for his funeral. One day, as per Menon's (Biju Menon) instruction, Charlie cleans Señor (Camilla's Dad)'s room. He finds a CD which Señor had seen before he died, and from that he finds out that Rahul was sent to Portugal to avoid the relationship between Camilla and Rahul, by paying him money by Señor. Again Rahul is spared by Charlie. As it goes, one day Menon enters a bar where he sees Rahul and another girl dancing together. He went to interrogate about it by following him, when he saw Rahul sitting with some goons and the girl. Later he researched on it, when he came to know that it wasn't a good life for Rahul in Portugal. He sold the factory which Señor offered him and he had taken loan from some goons for gambling and could not repay them. Camilla heard about it and she felt sorrow that she was keeping a crooked lover in her mind. Later Camilla and Menon go back to Kerala, India to fix marriage between Charlie and Camilla.
