The film starts with Alex narrating his sad story. He is the scion of a large and rich Christian family, whose male members take pride in flaunting their virility. The story starts with a monologue by David Abraham, IPS (Prithviraj) during the night of Christmas. When he leaves a party, he gets involved in an accident with Shan(Vinay Forrt) and Vinu(Anu Mohan). David takes them to hospital for treating Vinu's injury which he sustained while falling down from the bike. From the hospital Vinu escapes, to Shan's horror. David starts to suspect that there is something wrong. But Shan says there is no problem and David drops him at his place. Then he notices that Vinu has dropped his wallet in his jeep.

Vetri (Ashok Selvan) is a newly graduated criminology student who has an immense passion in becoming a detective. He has a very good observing capacity, which makes his professor believe that he will become a good detective someday. He gets a job from a detective company and is assigned with the task of shadowing and surveillance. He stays with his best friend Nambi and collects all the details about his targets. His next target is Madhu (Janani Iyer), a beautiful girl, for whom Vetri falls at first sight. Vetri's completed targets are killed one by one and Vetri understands that someone has used him to collect details about the victims, and the next one on the list is Madhu. He teams up with Inspector Raghuram and continue his enquiry with his help. On thorough investigation, Vetri finds that Sailesh and Sadagopan, who are a part of an insurance company, plot to take insurance policies, for the people who are single. The first two installments are paid by these schemers. By the third installment, the policy holders die in an accident . The policies are then claimed by another unknown person having fake relationship with the policy holder. The third person is then found to be Vallabha.Vetri, along with a police officer traces out the claimant of a policy who turns out to be none other than the professor who motivated Vetri to become a detective. Vetri then finds out the plot of his professor and his idea of linking him up with the detective agency. After narrating the story, the professor puts a bullet into his head. It is then shown that Vetri lives happily with friends and family taking care of the professor's old mother. Things seem fishy, when a newspaper contains a visiting card of Vallabha asking him to 'PICK THE CALL'.Vetri realises that even though his professor was involved in the insurance scam, he isn't Vallabha and that the actual Vallabha was still at large. The story ends with Vetri picking up a call.

Vishnu (Kunchacko Boban), Pappan (Prathap Pothen) and Louis (Biju Menon) are three ex-convicts who live together at Pappan's abode, trying to pick up from where they had let their lives off before being jailed. After many unsuccessful efforts to find employment, they appeal to Dr. Isaac (Narain), who was a counsellor in the prison. He suggests that they consider some form of self-employment and he will support them. Vishnu converts Pappan's Omni into an ambulance. Pappan runs a playschool and Louis works for a driving school run by a neighbour, Grace (Anjana Menon), a widow. But Dr. Isaac has some other intentions in supporting them and this forms the crux of the story.

Walter Vanangamudi (Vishal Krishna) and Kumbudren Saamy (Arya) are half-brothers, who constantly fight and try to outdo each other. Both brothers are pickpockets and get encouragement from their respective mothers. Walter's mother Maryamma (Ambika) encourages her son to steal and continue their "family tradition". However, Walter, an aspiring actor with an effeminate touch, is rather interested in arts than committing crimes. The Zamindar (G. M. Kumar), referred to as 'Highness' by the community, takes an affinity towards Saamy and Walter and treats them as his own family. He constantly encourages Walter to take up acting seriously and to be friendly towards his brother. Walter is smitten by a Police Constable Baby (Janani Iyer) from whom he attempts to steal after being dared by his brother to prove himself. She finds him completely amusing and eventually falls for him. He returns several stolen goods from his home and from Kumbudren Samy to rescue her from being dismissed and goes to great lengths to impress her. Kumbudren Samy falls for a college student Thenmozhi (Madhu Shalini) who is intimidated by his rough ways at first but reciprocates his love later on.

Karthik (Silambarasan) is a graduate Mechanical Engineering in Chennai who aspires to become a filmmaker. His friend introduces him to cinematographer Ganesh (Ganesh Janardhanan). With Ganesh's help Karthik becomes an assistant to director K. S. Ravikumar. Karthik's family, who are Tamil Hindu Veerakodi Vellalars (Vellalar), rent Jessie's (Trisha Krishnan) house. Jessie is from a conservative Malayali Nasrani Christian family from Alappuzha, Kerala, that lives upstairs. Karthik falls in love with Jessie the moment he meets her. Karthik tries to interact with Jessie (Trisha), who is afraid of speaking to men around her strict father, and ends up angering her. Unable to hide his feelings any longer, Karthik confesses his love for her; she does not respond. A few days later, Karthik learns from his sister that Jessie has gone to Kerala to visit her grandmother. He and Ganesh end up in Kerala to look for her. After several days, he finds her and apologises. She introduces him to her family in Kerala as her "classmate". Jessie denies she has any feelings for him but agrees to be his friend. On the train journey back home, however, the two get close and share a kiss. Karthik is convinced Jessie loves him; the two meet several times and Jessie begins to admit that she also likes Karthik, but wants to refrain from any problems because she knows her father wouldn't give her hand in marriage to a Hindu. Consequently, due to various misunderstandings between Jessie's brother and Karthik, her parents learn of their supposed affair. They fix a match and schedule her wedding. The day arrives and midway through the ceremony, Jessie refuses to marry the groom, displeasing everyone in her family. Karthik, who had, without anyone's knowledge, come to Kerala to witness the wedding is ecstatic and secretly visits Jessie at her home. It is then that Jessie admits she has indeed fallen in love with him. Karthik and Jessie continue to love each other without the knowledge of their parents.
