Mannadhi Mannan (Tamil: மன்னாதி மன்னன்) is a Tamil language swashbuckler film directed and produced by M. Natesan. The film features M. G. Ramachandran, Anjali Devi and Padmini in lead roles. The film, written by Kannadasan, had musical score by Viswanathan–Ramamoorthy and was released on diwali 1960. The film achieve cult status and remembered for the melodious music, meaningful lyrics and dialogue, the dances by Padmini, Ragini and Anjali Devi and the impressive performance by MGR, and the opening song, ‘Acchham Enbathu' helped MGR become a cultural icon. Though the on-screen presentation by Natesan appears somewhat disjointed, the film sustains interest, managed to run 90 days in theatres and fared well at the box office

Synopsis

Dancer Chitra (Padmini) and prince of Uraiyur Manivannan (M.G. Ramachandran) fall in love with each other after meeting in a dance competition. However, Chola King Kanikannan also desires Chitra. Meanwhile, Manivannan’s father, the Cheran King sends his minister, seeking the hand of Karpagavalli, daughter of King Karigala, for his son.

General Nagavelan (P. S. Veerappa) plans to murder Prince Rajarajan (M. G. Ramachandran) in order to be the Chozha king. Actually, Rajarajan was held captive and was being forced to signature by Nagavelan. Nagavelan's younger sister Priyamohini (Lalitha) who opposes her brother's deeds assists the wounded Rajarajan to escape. Udhayachandhran (M. N. Nambiar) who is Nagavelan's assistant is in love with Priyamohini but she rejects his advances not only that as he is working for Nagavelan but she is in love with Rajarajan too.

Maruthanaatu Ilavarasi is a well-woven story about a king (Veerappa) with two wives (one played by Saraswathi and the other does not appear in the movie!) and an evil-minded Minister (Chakrapani) whose sister is the younger queen. The two become pregnant and the evil genius persuades the king to believe that the senior queen had poisoned the junior queen out of sheer jealousy which the king tends to believe, but does not take any action. The frustrated Minister tries to eliminate the pregnant queen but she is saved by a courtier whom the Minister kills. The pregnant queen escapes many trials and gives birth to a son (MGR). He grows up and meets a young woman (Janaki) and her friend (Nagaratnam) and falls in love unaware that she is a princess. Their love grows and when he comes to know that she is a princess, he begins to distance himself from her. After many trials, the two come together and live happily.

Chokkalingam Navilur (T. K. Shanmugam) is a diwan at Vanjikottai Kingdom. He with his wife, Sivakami (Pasupuleti Kannamba), is loyal to their King. Chokkalingam without any hesitation accuses that Senathipathi (P.S. Veerappa), the brother of the King's second wife, Maharani Ranthamani Devi (Meenakshi) plotted the prince's killing (Daisy Irani). Found guilty, Senathipathi is banished by the kind but is helped by one of his soldier to stay in the kingdom without anyone's knowledge. He later sets up a fire in the city and stabs the king with his sword. The king before dying tells Chokkalingam to save his daughter Padma (Padmini) and the infant prince and dies later. In order to fulfil the king's desire, Chokkalingam sails to safety with the king's children, leaving his family behind. Soon his wife does the same with her children but is caught by the Senathipathi's army. Leaving her children on the moving boat, she is imprisoned for life at an island prison.
