Manon ([manɔ̃]) is a 1949 French film directed by Henri-Georges Clouzot. It is a loose adaptation of the 1731 novel Manon Lescaut by Abbé Prévost.
The film won the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival.
Synopsis
Clouzot updates the setting to World War II, making the story about a French Resistance fighter who rescues a woman from villagers convinced she is a Nazi collaborator.Actors

En 1944, à Paris, occupée par l'armée allemande, juste avant que les Alliés débarquent en Normandie. Au quartier général allemand, le général Quade et le Generaloberst von der Heinitz conseillent la situation militaire. Les deux hommes attendent le débarquement allié sur la côte française. Arrive alors le capitaine Fürstenwerth, le neveu de Quade, qui vient du front russe. Quade se confise à son neveu, qui voit aussi le désespoir d'une bataille finale dans le cas d'un débarquement américano-britannique en France. La quatrième personne présente est le major de l'Abwehr, Wedekind, sous le commandement de Quade. Le colonel Toller vient de Berlin pour superviser l'exécution de l'ordre d'Hitler.

In the Paris suburb of Petit-Clamart on 22 August 1962, an assassination attempt is made on the President of France General Charles de Gaulle by the militant French underground organisation OAS in anger over the French government granting independence to Algeria. As the president's motorcade passes, de Gaulle's unarmoured Citroën DS car is raked with machine gun fire, but the entire entourage escapes without injury. Within six months, OAS leader Jean Bastien-Thiry and several other members of the plot are captured and Bastien-Thiry is executed.

During World War II, Jean Picard (Errol Flynn) is a convicted killer being led to the guillotine. He escapes during an air raid but is captured by French Sûreté Inspector Marcel Bonet (Paul Lukas). They learn that a bridge has been blown up by three saboteurs, and that the Germans have taken 100 hostages who will be killed unless the saboteurs are apprehended by the Vichy police. To buy time in order to escape again, Picard persuades Bonet to let him pose as one of the saboteurs to save the hostages. In the course of enacting a story that will convince the Vichy that Picard is one of the escaped saboteurs, he and Bonet encounter the real saboteur, captured by the Vichy, and aid him in escaping.
