Synopsis
En 1944, à Paris, occupée par l'armée allemande, juste avant que les Alliés débarquent en Normandie. Au quartier général allemand, le général Quade et le Generaloberst von der Heinitz conseillent la situation militaire. Les deux hommes attendent le débarquement allié sur la côte française. L'ordre d'Hitler de se battre jusqu'à la mort et de sacrifier la vie des soldats allemands a sans aucun doute suscité la volonté de résister aux deux officiers. Arrive alors le capitaine Fürstenwerth, le neveu de Quade, qui vient du front russe. Quade se confise à son neveu, qui voit aussi le désespoir d'une bataille finale dans le cas d'un débarquement américano-britannique en France. La quatrième personne présente est le major de l'Abwehr, Wedekind, sous le commandement de Quade. Le colonel Toller vient de Berlin pour superviser l'exécution de l'ordre d'Hitler.Actors

In France during the German occupation, a young German naval officer is killed in Paris by a group of leftist activists. The compliant Vichy government seeks to appease the Germans by locating the perpetrators and agreeing to the execution of six people, and a special section is set up for this purpose. The section consists of judges who are too ambitious, cowardly or inhuman to refuse such work. In 1944, art masterpieces stolen by the Wehrmacht from French museums are being shipped to Germany; the officer in charge of the operation, Colonel Franz von Waldheim (Paul Scofield), is an ardent art lover and is determined to take the art to Germany, no matter the cost. During World War II, Jean Picard (Errol Flynn) is a convicted killer being led to the guillotine. He escapes during an air raid but is captured by French Sûreté Inspector Marcel Bonet (Paul Lukas). They learn that a bridge has been blown up by three saboteurs, and that the Germans have taken 100 hostages who will be killed unless the saboteurs are apprehended by the Vichy police. To buy time in order to escape again, Picard persuades Bonet to let him pose as one of the saboteurs to save the hostages. In the course of enacting a story that will convince the Vichy that Picard is one of the escaped saboteurs, he and Bonet encounter the real saboteur, captured by the Vichy, and aid him in escaping.
