Maappillai (Tamil: மாப்பிள்ளை) (Son in Law) is a 1952 Indian Tamil film directed by T. R. Raghunath under the banner of National Productions. The film features an ensemble cast consisting of T. R. Ramachandran, P. K. Saraswathi, T. K. Ramachandran, P. V. Narasimha Bharathi, P. S. Veerappa, M. N. Rajam, M. Lakshmiprabha, V. K. Ramasamy, K. A. Thangavelu, M. Saroja, M. S. S. Bhagyam, K. Lakshmikantham, Ragini, Kaka Radhakrishnan, C. S. Pandian, R. Balasubramaniam and T. K. Pushpavalli.

Synopsis

The film narrates the tale of a Madras city-based businessman (R. Balasubramaniam) in whose printing press T. R. Ramachandran works as an office boy. Fortune favours him, and he becomes a rich man and is hated by the son of the printing press, the villain (T.K. Ramachandran) who vows to destroy the new rich man and take away his wealth. Kumar (Narasimha Bharathi) is a popular medical practitioner of the city and a do-gooder. The villain’s sister Nalini (P.K. Saraswathi) is attracted to the doctor, but the villain gets her married to the hero. The villain plans to kill the hero and shift the blame to the doctor. What happens to his evil designs and how justice triumphs form the rest of the story.

Ratnapuri is a small kingdom besieged by manifold troubles. The King’s only daughter Ratna (B. Saroja Devi) is kidnapped and the King dies without naming any successors. Marthandan (MGR), a member of the royal family is chosen by the majority of the imperial council, including the ministers and the commander-in-chief, to be the new ruler. However, the Rajaguru (P. S. Veerappa) has a different idea. Unknown to anyone, he has the princess Ratna in his custody in an island. Ratna has grown up completely unaware of her ancestry. Meanwhile, the Rajaguru plans to do get rid of Marthandan and put up his stooge Pingalan (M. N. Nambiar) as the King. He then plans to marry Ratna himself, get rid of Pingalan, and declare himself the ruler. Meanwhile, Veerabagu (K. R. Ramsingh), the loyal bodyguard of the erstwhile King, and his gang of committed people, including his son Bhoopathi and daughter Madana (P. Bhanumathi) are furious at an outsider ascending the throne. Elsewhere in the kingdom, people are far from happy. Shortage of food and unemployment are rampant all around.

After the execution of Kattabomman in 17 October 1799 at Kayattar, Chinna Marudhu gave asylum to Kattabomman's brother Oomadurai (dumb brother). But, the British took this reason to invade and attacked Sivaganga in 1801 with a powerful army. The Maruthu Pandiyars and their allies were quite successful and captured three districts from the British. British considered it as a serious threat to their future in India that they rushed additional troops from Britain to put down the Maruthu Pandiyars' rebellion.

Following the betrayal of the Prime Minister, the Maharaja and the Maharani of the kingdom are murdered and their son, MGR, is hidden in a herd of cows. Sivaji Ganesan plays the younger physician to the king (R. Balasubramaniam) and his wife (Padmini) was modelled on Kannagi as the personification of female virtues. The physician is commanded to the palace to treat the king where the princess (M. N. Rajam) falls for him and virtually enslaves him, preventing him from going back to his wife. She even goes to the extent of blinding the hero and in a long drawn out song-oriented climax, the wife prays before the gold statue of Parvathi, hence the title, and gets back her husband's sight and happiness.

Chokkalingam Navilur (T. K. Shanmugam) is a diwan at Vanjikottai Kingdom. He with his wife, Sivakami (Pasupuleti Kannamba), is loyal to their King. Chokkalingam without any hesitation accuses that Senathipathi (P.S. Veerappa), the brother of the King's second wife, Maharani Ranthamani Devi (Meenakshi) plotted the prince's killing (Daisy Irani). Found guilty, Senathipathi is banished by the kind but is helped by one of his soldier to stay in the kingdom without anyone's knowledge. He later sets up a fire in the city and stabs the king with his sword. The king before dying tells Chokkalingam to save his daughter Padma (Padmini) and the infant prince and dies later. In order to fulfil the king's desire, Chokkalingam sails to safety with the king's children, leaving his family behind. Soon his wife does the same with her children but is caught by the Senathipathi's army. Leaving her children on the moving boat, she is imprisoned for life at an island prison.
