Synopsis
Mario, travaille comme metteur en page au journal du Parti communiste italien « L'Unità » et son épouse Maria comme pharmacienne. Le couple qui s'est formé depuis une dizaine d'années a deux enfants et traverse une période de crise due surtout à des motifs politiques. En effet, la Parti communiste cherche sa voie et deux courants s'affrontent, celui de Achille Occhetto (soutenu par Mario) et celui de Pietro Ingrao (soutenu par Maria). Dans la section PCI où ils sont inscrits, il y a un autre « Mario », un jeune technicien originaire du Sud Italie et lui aussi du côté de Ingrao. Entre les deux, l'entente se change en relation et le couple se sépare. Cette séparation est néanmoins de courte durée et finalement Maria rejoint son « premier Mario ».Actors

Adelaide (Monica Vitti) is a florist who begins to date Oreste (Marcello Mastroianni), who is an already married construction worker. However, Nello (Giancarlo Giannini)], a pizza cook, interposes in the relationship, seducing Adelaide as well. The situation ensues in a quarrel, after which she is injured and hospitalized. Then, the three of them decide to live together but, eventually, the confused Adelaide leaves them after attempting suicide, to get involved romantically with Ambleto (Hércules Cortés), a butcher. Nonetheless, Nello the cook attempts suicide and the moved Adelaide returns with him. Oreste, who is unemployed now, intervenes again. Adelaide refuses both so another fight ensues, which causes the death of Adelaide.

On May 8, 1938, the day Hitler visited Mussolini in Rome, Antonietta, a native and sentimental homemaker (Loren) stays home doing her usual domestic tasks, while her fascist husband and her six spoilt children take to the streets to follow the parade. Lors d'un court « séjour en Suisse pour affaires », le dottor Rossi (en fait un patron-voyou et escroc italien qui vient déposer des fonds en Suisse) est attiré par une superbe jeune femme à motocyclette sur des routes escarpées en montagne.
