The film is a fictionalized account of the Defense of the Great Wall. During the Second Sino- Japanese war 20,000 Japanese troops and 50 tanks invade Pa Tou Lou Tzu, or Badaling, a strategic point along the Great Wall of China. The Defense of the Great Wall was one of the earliest battles, or "incidents," between Chinese and Japanese troops. The Chinese captured a Japanese outpost following a fierce battle. With stick grenades the Chinese disabled Japanese machine gun nests and killed all the Japanese inside. The Chinese outpost, with a force of seven men, held off the invading Japanese army for five days. First attack by Mongol mercenaries and Japanese troops failed and all Mongols were killed by the Chinese. On the sixth day, all 7 soldiers were killed in action. However, the outpost successfully covered for other Chinese forces to retreat. The seven soldiers tricked the Japanese army into believing there were a thousand Chinese troops defending the outpost., 1h54

In a one-week timeframe, life at the front in a RFC squadron is documented. The real story begins a year before with fighter ace Major John Gresham (Malcolm McDowell) speaking to a class of students at Eton public school in October 1916. One year later, a new recruit arrives at Gresham's base in France, 2nd Lt. Croft (Peter Firth). Gresham had been his house captain at Eton and is also the boyfriend of his older sister. Gresham already relies on alcohol to cope with combat stress and continue flying. Now the strain of being responsible for this young recruit (a potential brother-in-law) is an additional burden. The film deals with the relationships among four men in a Japanese prisoner of war camp during the Second World War — Major Jack Celliers (Bowie), a rebellious New Zealander with a guilty secret from his youth; Captain Yonoi (Sakamoto), the young camp commandant; Lieutenant Colonel John Lawrence (Conti), a British officer who has lived in Japan and speaks Japanese fluently; and Sergeant Hara (Takeshi), who is seemingly brutal and yet humane in some ways and with whom Lawrence develops a peculiar friendship., 1h33
