Benjamín "Benny" García is deported from the United States to his hometown in Mexico (a fictional place named San Miguel Arcángel). Back home is a bleak picture, he can't find an honest job and most of the town is held with the business of drug trafficking. Luz, sans travail et sans argent, abandonnée par son amant, est accusée d'avoir tué sa progéniture. Les preuves de sa culpabilité font pourtant défaut. Emprisonnée, elle tente de se rappeler les circonstances du drame. Le film s'inspire d'un cas authentique, que l'on a appelé au Mexique l'affaire de La Fiera del Ajusco (La Médée de l'Ajusco ) : une jeune mère, pauvre et ignorante, Elvira Luz Cruz, originaire d'un quartier proche du volcan Ajusco, au sud de Mexico, est arrêtée pour l'assassinat de ses quatre enfants, le 12 août 1982. En septembre 1984, au cours d'un procès entaché d'irrégularités, la jeune femme est alors condamnée à vingt-huit ans de prison par la Cour supérieure de justice de son district.

In 1952, the presidential candidate of the PUM political party Carmelo Barriga visits the rural town of San Jilemón el Alto where he gives a speech promoting his candidacy and political party. During the speech and among the townspeople, a young woman gives birth to two twin girls. In a political move, Carmelo decides to adopt one of the girls whom he names Lorena and who becomes an active politician in her own political party, the PUF. Lorena then becomes a presidential candidate running against her rival, Santos Barboza of the PUM. When Lorena and her campaign visits San Toribio del Trueno, a firework accident causes her to abandon the candidacy. Fortunately, campaign member Gonzalo remembers about Lorena's twin and decides to search for her so that she can substitute Lorena and therefore the campaign can resume.
