New York Police Officer Rembrandt "Remy" Macy (Berenger) investigates a murder which began by the discovery of a disembodied hand. After the victim is identified, the victim's ex-flatmate Nikki (Heuring) becomes scared that she may be in danger and stays at Macy's place until they can get to the bottom of the situation. After accidentally seeing her near-naked, he finds himself starting to become attracted to her and she is able to seduce him. A car delivery driver, Kowalski (Barry Newman), arrives in Denver, Colorado late Friday night with a black Chrysler Imperial. The delivery service clerk, Sandy (Karl Swenson), urges him to get some rest, but Kowalski insists on getting started with his next assignment to deliver a white 1970 Dodge Challenger R/T 440 Magnum to San Francisco by Monday. Before leaving Denver, Kowalski pulls into a biker bar parking lot around midnight to buy Benzedrine pills to stay awake for the long drive ahead. He bets his dealer, Jake (Lee Weaver), that he will get to San Francisco by 3:00 pm "tomorrow", even though the delivery is not due until Monday. (Distance between the towns is approximately 1,000 miles (1,600 km) by road).

Elspeth McGillicuddy rejoint son amie Miss Marple par le train de 16 h 50. Elle est réveillée par le dépassement du train omnibus. Par la fenêtre de son compartiment, elle voit un homme de dos en train d'étrangler une femme. Miss Marple et elle se rendent le lendemain à la police, mais elles reçoivent un accueil froid. Aucun cadavre n'est retrouvé. Refaisant le trajet en train, elles sont convaincues que le crime est lié au manoir isolé de Luther Crackenthorpe qu'elles aperçoivent du train. Miss Marple persuade une amie de son neveu, Lucy Eyelesbarrow, de s'y faire embaucher comme cuisinière. Celle-ci ne tarde pas à découvrir un cadavre dans les dépendances du manoir.

The greedy "gentleman" allowed himself to be tied up while Carasco assaulted his wife Nina (Claire Bloom). These events lead to the stabbing of the husband and Carrasco was tried, convicted, and condemned for the crimes.
