The miniseries premiered at the 2009 Roma Fiction Fest, then it was broadcast in two parts on 1 and 2 December of the same year on Sky Cinema. Moana tells the life of Italian iconic pornographic actress Moana Pozzi. The actress Ilona Staller sued the production of the film for the unauthorized use of the character "Cicciolina", of which she owned the rights; the case was finally dismissed by court.

In 1952, 10-year-old Larry Flynt is selling moonshine in Kentucky. Twenty years later, Flynt and his younger brother, Jimmy, run the Hustler Go-Go club in Cincinnati. In early 1920s Copenhagen, the illustrator and artist Gerda Wegener (Alicia Vikander) asks her husband, Einar Wegener (Eddie Redmayne), to stand in for a female model. The popularity of the portraits leads to Gerda painting her husband in further pictures as a woman.
