Synopsis
Abby Abbot (Loretta Young) lives in New York City together with her teenage daughter Susan (Betty Lynn). They support themselves with money from a trust fund started by her late husband. An attorney by the name John Heaslip (v) handles the placement of the money, and he sees to it that payment is made every three years. He is also romantically interested in Abby, but she has rejected hs proposals to marry her consistently. Since Abby has already spent all her money from the current lump sum, John informs her that she will have to wait another year for the next payment.Actors

Chuck Arnold (Dan Dailey) is a bandleader during the 1920s. He meets hometown girl Peggy Mayhew (Jeanne Crain), a flapper script girl, at one of the band's presentations and the next day they get married. Though she loves him, life on the road becomes increasingly difficult for her, and eventually, with the rise of the Great Depression, in 1929, she tires of it and returns to her country home. Meek, aging, hypochondriac stage producer J.J.
