Synopsis
Aliocha commence à gagner son pain chez son oncle Serguéev qui tente de l'initier au dessin industriel mais sa tante et sa grand-tante l'ont pris comme souffre-douleur, l'accaparent sans cesse pour assurer les tâches ménagères et délibérément l'empêchent d'apprendre le métier. Heureusement il sympathise avec Natalia la blanchisseuse et fait aussi connaissance avec une voisine, une dame riche qui lui prête des livres qu'il va lire, la nuit, en cachette car on veut aussi l'empêcher de lire. Il confesse bien au pope sa passion pour la lecture mais celui-ci fait la sourde oreille. Il surprend aussi des gens qui tiennent des réunions mais il ne comprend pas s'il y a une relation entre ce phénomène et l'assassinat du tsar Alexandre II qui est annoncé par le glas en pleine nuit. Il finit par quitter cette maison infernale car à la suite d'une rixe entre deux jeunes, éméchés, on l'accuse d'avoir volé un porte monnaie. C'est l'occasion pour la patronne de lui flanquer une raclée et de le renvoyer bien que Natalia prouve qu'il n'y est pour rien.Actors

The German conquerors are above nothing, not even the slaughter of small children, to break the spirit of their Soviet captives. Suffering more than most is Olga (Nataliya Uzhviy), a Soviet partisan who returns to the village to bear her child, only to endure the cruelest of arbitrary tortures at the hands of the Nazis. Eventually, the villagers rise up against their oppressors-but unexpectedly do not wipe them out, electing instead to force the surviving Nazis to stand trial for their atrocities in a postwar "people's court." Angèle is a 40-year-old beautician who works at the title establishment in Paris. She has been an orphan from the age of eight, her father having killed her mother for suspected infidelity, and then killed himself when her infidelity was proved untrue. An unkempt younger man, Antoine, sees her at a cafe as she is being dumped by her latest fling, and falls in love with her. He stands outside the beauty shop to watch for Angèle, follows her to a café and declares his love for her, but she for once is lost for words and does not immediately return his feelings. Antoine also reveals that despite his feelings for her, he is engaged, but feels he is drifting away from his fiancée. In the 19th century, a Grande Dame (Jeanne Moreau) summons The Brothers Grimm to her palace, where the brothers discuss their interpretation of the Cinderella story and notice a painting displayed in the room. Before dying, Auguste's last words are directed to Danielle, which causes the Baroness to envy Danielle and treat her miserably for the next ten years. While Marguerite (Megan Dodds) is hostile and cruel to Danielle, Jacqueline (Melanie Lynskey) is kinder and more respectful to her, though she often stays out of the crossfires to keep the peace.
