Starting in 1967 Oceanside, Kathy Wakeman is a high school senior who, soon after graduation, marries her sweetheart, a Marine named Chuck Wakemore. Their lives as newlyweds is short-lived, as he is ordered to serve in Vietnam. During his absence, she spends her time at the local recreation center and befriends her neighbor Lorraine Simpson, a mother whose husband is also away to fight in the war. When Kathy is informed that her husband has been killed, she is devastated and loses all lust for life. Her parents notice that she is unable to deal with his death and she joins a war widow support program. Her parents want her to move back to their house, but she refuses to.

Gene Garrison (Gene Hackman) is a widowed New York college professor who is in a long distance relationship with a woman in California. Gene wants to marry and move to California, where his girlfriend has her medical practice and is raising her children. His mother is sympathetic to Gene's dreams of moving, although aware of the toll it could take on his father (Douglas). In this sequel, God asks the help of 11-year-old Tracy Richards (Louanne Sirota) to help promote Himself. Tracy creates the slogan "Think God" and soon has her friends spreading the message by posters, graffiti and other ways. But Tracy's parents and psychiatrists think the young girl is just insane. God is the only one that can straighten out the situation. One of the memorable scenes showed God riding a motorcycle, with Tracy riding in the sidecar, where there were scenes that showed nobody on the motorcycle, which baffled the two policemen.
