Synopsis
Seenu (Karthik) grows as an orphan and becomes a full-time stealer, he helps prisoners by solving their problems outside. One day, intrigued by a prisoner silence, Seenu asks him his problem. The prisoner is Adhiseshan (Devan), maternal uncle of Gayatri (Srinidhi), and he wants to save her life from her paternal uncle (Anandaraj) and her brother. Seenu promised him to solve his problem. Firstly, Gayatri avoids Seenu but she soon understands the conspiracy of Rajasekhar and she begin to be closed with Seenu. Adhiseshan reveals to Seenu after seeing the photo of Seenu's mother that he is his father. Happy, he brings Gayatri to Adhiseshan's home but they find him death. Gayatri's guardians borrows lot of money, so they are sent to jail, she cannot stay to her house so Seenu accommodates her. Seenu decided to earn money in the right way to realize Gayatri's dream : to become a Carnatic music singer. When she becomes a famous singer, she builds a new house and she reveals to Seenu that she's in love with Suresh (Siva), her hardcore fan. Suresh's father releases Rajasekhar to separate them before their marriage. Seenu manages to save them and the couple elope. To keep his neighbouring (Manorama) promise after her death, Seenu decide to carry the widow woman and her son.Actors

The film takes place in a village after which the movie is titled. Revathy leads a cloistered life and does not visit anyone. She is worshipped as a holy lad upon whom the god comes down to give them orders periodically. Revathy was an orphan and is found by Janagaraj, who is a street performer. They go from house to house begging for food. One day a lonely woman, Sulakshana,(a secret prostitute of the village high man) accepts Revathy as her own daughter and janagaraj as her brother, into her own house and provides for them. After 10 years, revathy attains age and some days later finds sulakshan's occupation. She and janagaraj attempt to leave her house, but sulakshana suddenly falls ill and this stops their exit . After Sulakshana's death, Vijaykakumar, the head of the village, tries to take advantage of Revathi. But Revathi keeps dodging him and keeps herself chaste.

Vaanavaraayan (Rajinikanth) plays the role of a feudal chieftain, adored and respected by his village people. He lives with his grandparents (M. N. Nambiar & Manorama). Following his advice, they abstain from voting in the elections and instead, pool the money given by the candidates to get themselves some basic amenities. Vallavaraayan (Napoleon) is his arch enemy. Their enmity is further sharpened when Vaanavaraayan wins the hand of Vaitheeswari (Meena), whom Vallavaraayan had also wished to wed. So Vallavaraayan convinces the priest at the temple to mix a poison in the holy water that Vaitheeswari drinks. As a result she becomes incapable of conceiving. But surprisingly, Vaitheeswari soon becomes pregnant-though she has pretended with the help of the mid-wife (S. N. Lakshmi), to do so to uphold her husband's honor. She takes poison and kills herself unable to bear the grief of being incapable of giving her husband a child and on her deathbed makes Vaanavarayan swear to take Ponni (Aishwariya) as his wife. Vaanavarayan however refuses until Ponni agrees to marry Sembattai (Thalapathi Dinesh)- Vallavarayan's hechman-who abandons her to Vallavarayan's vice. Infuriated Vaanavarayam attacks Vallavarayam and spares his life after giving him a sermon on how to win the heart of people.

In the past, Jeevadurai (Jaiganesh), an honest police officer, was killed by Govindan (Vijayakumar). Thereafter, Rajaratnam (Sathyaraj), Jeevadurai's son, was brought by D.I.G Pandidurai (Sivaji Ganesan). Few years later, Rajaratnam is married to Devaki (Rupini) and they have a son. Like his father, Rajaratnam becomes a police officer. In Shanthi Nagar, Govindan who is now known as Kocha controls the city and the people cannot face him and his henchmen. His adopted father Pandidurai transfers Rajaratnam to Shanthi Nagar.

The film starts with Singaravelan a.k.a. Velan (Kamal Hassan), on his birthday taming a wild bull by just talking to him. He seems to share a special bond with animals as he works in his farm filled with animals. Later that day, his mother, Parvathy (Sumithra), calls him and decides to tell him the truth about his father. Velan, in his hyper imagination, thinks that his father was killed by four goons (as is the case of many Tamil films then) but soon learns that his father did actually die of a brain illness like he had been told before. But, he had died heartbroken that his marriage with Velan’s mother was not accepted by her sister-in-law and they had broken all links. Further, they believe that it was Parvathy’s curse that killed them in a car accident and they get promise from the guardian, that their daughter should not be married to Parvathy's son. Velan’s mother reveals that it is Velan’s duty to get married to her brother's daughter Sumathi (Khusboo) to bring the separated family back together. Armed with only a picture of the girl when she was 4, he leaves for Madras to fulfill his mother’s wishes.
