Nesimi (Azerbaijani: Nəsimi) is a full-length Azerbaijani film shot in Baku, Absheron, Gobustan, Nakhichevan, Shamakhi (Azerbaijan), Bukhara, Samarkand (Uzbekistan), Halab, Damascus (Syria) in 1973. Screenplay was written by Isa Huseynov. Directed by Hasan Seyidbeyli, this film is in history drama genre depicting the life of a prominent Azerbaijani philosopher and poet, Imadaddin Nasimi. The film is considered as one of the best Azerbaijani movies in historical genre produced in during Soviet times. After this debut in a big movie, the actor in the leading role, Rasim Balayev became a notable actor after this movie.

Synopsis

The film is a biographical true story about life of Imadaddin Nasimi, well known throughout the East for his school of philosophy and thought, poems and promotion of moral values in a feudal society. During the 14th-15th centuries, when Azerbaijan was a stage for warring powers and civil wars, Nasimi was the only poet committed to promotion of humanism and moral values inflicting criticism on the ruling system and the society itself. For his intruding role in feudal regimes, Nasimi lived a complex and tragic life. At the end of the film, Nasimi is killed in front of masses as his skin is pealed off while alive.

XVI siècle. Genichiro et sa sœur Shinobu désirent venger leur père tué par le clan des Samoto. Ils s'adressent au célèbre sabreur Musashi Miyamoto. Following a news story depicting the demolition of a slum in East London, South Africa, journalist Donald Woods (Kevin Kline) seeks more information about the incident and ventures off to meet black activist Steve Biko (Denzel Washington). Biko has been officially banned by the South African government and is not permitted to leave his defined banning area at King William's Town. Woods is formally against Biko's banning, but remains critical of his political views. Biko invites Woods to visit a black township to see the impoverished conditions and to witness the effect of the government-imposed restrictions, which make up the apartheid system. Woods begins to agree with Biko's desire for a South Africa where blacks have the same opportunities and freedoms as those enjoyed by the white population. As Woods comes to understand Biko's point of view, a friendship slowly develops between them.

Jirozaemon est un riche et honnête fabricant de soie qui avait été abandonné à la naissance par une famille inconnue mais sans doute aisée. Il est affecté d'une cicatrice au visage dont l'extrême laideur fait fuir les femmes. Comme il souhaite une épouse coûte que coûte, des clients lui arrangent des rencontres : en vain. Ils décident un jour de distraire le malheureux en l'emmenant à Yoshiwara, le quartier des plaisirs de Edo (ancien nom de Tokyo). Là-bas, même les geishas ne veulent pas lui tenir compagnie. Seule Tamatsuru, une prostituée de bas-étage sortant de prison et décidée à monter dans la hiérarchie sociale, accepte la compagnie du « monstre ». Celui-ci s'en émeut. Elle lui promet le mariage s'il l'aide à devenir « première courtisane ». Jirozaemon se ruine pour elle, à un moment où son entreprise traverse une mauvaise passe, avant de réaliser que le tout Yoshiwara s'est moqué de lui.
