1984 est un téléfilm anglais adapté du roman de George Orwell, 1984, qui fut diffusé sur la chaîne de télévision BBC Television en décembre 1954. La diffusion de ce film fit l'objet d'une controverse qui remonta jusqu'au Parlement du Royaume-Uni, à la suite de nombreuses plaintes de téléspectateurs concernant sa nature supposée « subversive », et certaines de ses scènes jugées « choquantes ». Cependant, près d'un demi-siècle plus tard, en 2000, un sondage réalisé par le British Film Institute devant permettre d'établir le Top 100 du British Film Institute TV pour tout le XX siècle, plaça cette version télévisée de 1984 à la 73e place, en dépit du fait qu'elle n'avait été diffusée que cinq fois à la télévision à cette dernière date, et jamais en cassette vidéo ni en DVD.

The film begins with a tank battle where blond-haired Captain Holland (Anthony Steel) is sprawled unconscious in the dunes. When he comes to, he walks over the dunes until collapsing near a Bedouin encampment at an oasis. He is found by the sheik's daughter, Mabrouka (Anna Maria Sandri), who takes him to the camp which consists of several black tents.

The film is set in the early 1950s. The British Prime Minister, (Ronald Adam), is sent a letter by Professor Willingdon (Barry Jones), who works at Britain's Atomic weapons development facility, the Wallingford Research Centre, from which he has surreptitiously taken a nuclear warhead. It is a very explicit threat that Willingdon will destroy the centre of London in a week's time, at noon (hence the film title), unless the British government declares that it is to stop all stockpiling of nuclear warheads. Detective Superintendent Folland (André Morell) of Scotland Yard's Special Branch is charged with tracking down Willingdon and stopping him.
