Odyssey 2050 is a film project that incorporates digital animation as well as documentary and live action sequences with the aim of motivating young people from around the world into taking constructive action on climate change. Odyssey 2050 is a registered NGO and the film is being produced in Costa Rica by Daniel and Miguel Bermejo of the Synchro Film company, Bruce Callow of the UK Embassy in Costa Rica, and with the collaboration and assistance of various organisations, such as the Earth Charter Initiative and the British Council.

Odyssey 2050 blends animation and graphics with real life images of environmental destruction, and aims to raise awareness, create positive change and to reach young people across the world.

Odyssey 2050 is managed by the Odyssey 2050 Association, which enjoys the backing of the British Embassy in Costa Rica, and along with the production of the film, the team at Odyssey 2050 are engaged worldwide in running workshops at schools and universities, climate change conferences and businesses.

Synopsis

The year is 2050 and alien space travelers look down on Planet Earth and witness the terrible devastation that it has suffered from climate change and environmental destruction at the hands of its most dominant species—humans. Incomprehension sweeps throughout the alien ship and into their alien thoughts, as they ask 'how can such an intelligent and creative species treat their own planet like this?' They return to the present day to warn young people about the society that awaits them if positive action is not taken. Time is running out—it's not too late.

In New York City's Central Park, people begin committing mass suicide. Initially believed to be caused by a bio-terrorist attack using an airborne neurotoxin, the behavior quickly spreads across the northeastern United States. Elliot Moore, a high school science teacher in Philadelphia, hears about the attacks and decides to go to Harrisburg by train with his wife, Alma. They are accompanied by his friend Julian and Julian's eight-year-old daughter Jess. Julian's wife is stuck in Philadelphia but is expected to meet them in Harrisburg. The train loses all radio contact en route and stops at a small town. They receive word that Philadelphia has been attacked by the toxin and Julian's wife was not able to get on the train to Harrisburg. Julian decides to go look for her, leaving his daughter with the Moores while he hitches a ride. However, the town has already been hit by the toxin. Succumbing to it, the driver and Julian both commit suicide.

The Spanish film crew led by Carlos Rodriguez is following the life stories of three children - Lidia Pidvalna, Anastasia Pavlenko, and Andriy Kovalchuk - whose lives were drastically changed after an explosion at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Station on April 26, 1986. Dans un village karen au nord de la Thaïlande, une jeune fille, Nora, et son petit frère, Luka, s'occupent des animaux en utilisant le don qu'a Luka pour communiquer par télépathie avec toutes les formes de vie. Dans leur village, qui s'élève à l'orée d'une forêt, Nora suit l'enseignement d'une prêtresse âgée et bienveillante qui vit dans une grande proximité avec la nature. Un jour, après avoir pris soin d'un oisillon perdu, ils contemplent avec inquiétude l'apparition dans le ciel d'étranges zébrures de feu. Peu après, Sam, un jeune scout fils du Président Johnson, Président de Capitalville, la capitale mondiale, tombe par erreur dans un ravin près de leur village. Nora, Luka et les villageois le soignent mais, à son réveil, il commence par se montrer écœuré et moqueur en découvrant leur mode de vie. Sam est un passionné de nouvelles technologies d'information et de communication qui ne peut pas vivre sans son ordinateur portable et sa montre-téléphone dotée d'un GPS. Mais il peine à se faire prendre au sérieux par son père le Président, d'autant que juste avant son accident il a perturbé une importante cérémonie scout internationale annuelle en tentant d'atterrir en deltaplane et non en hélicoptère. Nora et Luka sont d'abord en colère contre Sam, mais leur dispute est interrompue par un cataclysme mondial : des crevasses de feu s'ouvrent dans le ciel, correspondant à des trous dans la couche d'ozone, et il en tombe tous les satellites artificiels jusque-là en orbite autour de la Terre. Des créatures inconnues, minuscules, très rapides et qui semblent faites de feu, ont pris le contrôle des satellites et tentent d'envahir la région en pénétrant dans toutes les machines électriques ou électroniques pour les changer en pantins dévastateurs. Lorsque les créatures s'engouffrent toutes dans l'ordinateur portable de Sam, Nora parvient à les détruire en expédiant l'objet dans une mare. Nora et Luka acceptent à contrecœur de le raccompagner chez lui. Sur la route, Sam découvre le savoir et les talents de Nora et de Luka pour comprendre leur milieu naturel, mettre à profit la flore sans la gâcher et communiquer avec la faune. Une amitié commence à se nouer entre les trois enfants.
