Of Men and War (French: Des hommes et de la guerre) is a 2014 documentary film directed by Laurent Bécue-Renard. It explores the psychological trauma of war experienced by a group of American Iraq veterans upon their return from the front. It was presented in the Special Screenings section at the 2014 Cannes Film Festival. The film won the VPRO IDFA Award for Best Feature-Length Documentary at the 2014 International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam. It was nominated for the European Film Award for Best Documentary at the 27th European Film Awards and screened at the Museum of Modern Art's Documentary Fortnight.

Synopsis

Vétérans américains de la guerre d'Irak, une douzaine d'hommes restent traumatisés par la mort qu'ils ont vue, frôlée ou donnée. Dans un centre d'accueil en Californie, ils mènent une thérapie de groupe pour verbaliser les horreurs qui les hantent et se délivrer du stress post-traumatique.

Though Okuzaki ultimately holds Emperor Hirohito accountable for all the suffering of the war, ("I hate irresponsible people...the most cowardly man in Japan, is the Emperor Hirohito"), he painstakingly tracks down former soldiers and officers, coaxing them into telling him about the deaths, often abusing them verbally and at times physically in the process (at one point, Okuzaki states that "violence is my forte"). The people he talks to give different accounts of what transpired almost 40 years earlier, some saying that those killed were executed for desertion after the war was already over, while others state that they were shot for cannibalizing New Guinea indigenous people.

In 1982, Ari Folman was a nineteen-year-old infantry soldier in the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). In 2006, he meets with a friend from his army service period, who tells him of the nightmares connected to his experiences from the Lebanon War. Folman is surprised to find that he remembers nothing from that period. Later that night he has a vision from the night of the Sabra and Shatila massacre, the reality of which he is unable to clearly recall. In his memory, he and his soldier comrades are bathing at night by the seaside in Beirut under the light of flares descending over the city.
