Add to a movie listOf Stars and Men is a 1964 animated film from the Hubley family of animators, based on the 1959 book of the same name by astronomer Harlow Shapley, who also narrates. Made in the style of a documentary, it tells of humankind's quest (in the form of a child) to find its place in the universe, through themes such as outer space, physical matter, the meaning of life and the periodic table. There are no character voices; instead, they "talk" through their actions. It has been cited as an example of an "animated documentary".
When it was finished, the film was first screened during a conference at MIT's Visual Department. The film's public premiere was on April 28, 1964 at New York's Beekman Theater, along with a collection of Hubley/U.P.A. shorts (Moonbird and Gerald McBoing-Boing among them) which preceded its showing. The critical reception was uniformly positive.
Its genre was a matter of contention among festival curators. At the Venice Film Festival, Of Stars and Men was placed in the live-action feature category, while at the San Francisco Film Festival, it competed in the documentary category and won an award.
Of Stars and Men received a VHS release from Buena Vista Home Video in July 1990, and had its DVD debut from Image Entertainment nine years later, as part of a compilation of Hubley productions.

According to Adams' Lapine language, culture and mythology, the world was created by the god Frith, who represents the Sun. All animals lived harmoniously, but the rabbits eventually multiplied, and their appetite led to a food shortage. At the prayers of the desperate animals, Frith warned the rabbit prince El-ahrairah to control his people, but was scoffed at. In retaliation, Frith gave special gifts to every animal, but some animals he made predators to prey upon the rabbits. Satisfied that El-ahrairah (Now also known as "Prince with a Thousand Enemies") had learned his lesson, Frith also gave the rabbits speed and cunning; while many would seek to kill them, the rabbits could survive by their wits and quickness.

The film begins with Franklin finishing up his time travel machine. He explains to his dog Blu that it works with the synthesis of the four elements. Just outside, Jimmy Five and Smudge concoct an "infallible plan" to steal Monica's blue toy rabbit, Samson. The plan eventually fails when Monica, while on a picnic with Maggy, discovers it. Jimmy Five and Smudge hide in Franklin's office. Monica and Maggy follow them there, where Monica accidentally throws her rabbit on Franklin's machine, causing the elements to travel to different periods in time. Franklin sends each child into a different time after the elements in order to bring them back. If they fail, time will slow down and eventually stop. Monica and Blu end up in Prehistoric times to recover the element of fire. Jimmy Five is sent to the 30th century to recover the element of air. Maggy is sent to a few years back (when the kids were babies) to recover the element of earth. Smudge is sent to an indigenous tribe in Colonial-era Brazil to recover water.
