Synopsis
Oliver's mother, a penniless outcast, died giving birth to him. As a young boy Oliver is brought up in a workhouse, later apprenticed to an uncaring undertaker, and eventually is taken in by a gang of thieves who befriend him for their own purposes. Après des études en Europe, Ethel Warren revient faire des débuts à New York avec la compagnie d'opéra dont Jean Paurel, un baryton de renommée mondiale, est la vedette. Carlo Sonino, un autre membre de la troupe, tombe amoureux d'Ethel et la prévient contre les avances du célèbre chanteur. Paurel s'amourache d'Ethel, provoquant ainsi la jalousie de la prima donna, Sabotini. Quand, après le premier acte, Ethel apprend que Paurel a eu une attaque à la gorge, elle se rue dans les coulisses. Carlo, prévenu par Sabotini, la suit et lui fait une scène, ce à quoi elle répond en annonçant ses fiançailles avec Paurel. Ce dernier étant incapable de jouer le deuxième acte, Carlo prend sa place et est très applaudi. Après que Paurel apprend qu'il ne pourra jamais plus chanter, Bianca, une chanteuse à la retraite et le premier amour de Paurel, lui apprend que Carlo est leur fils et supplie Paurel de laisser Ethel pour le bonheur du jeune homme. Finalement il accepte.

The story is set in 1482 Paris, France. Quasimodo is a deaf, half-blind, hunchbacked bell-ringer of the famous Cathedral of Notre Dame in Paris. His master Jehan, the evil brother of the saintly archdeacon Don Claudio, prevails upon the hunchback to kidnap the fair Esmeralda, a dancing gypsy girl (and the adopted daughter of Clopin, the king of the oppressed beggars of Paris' underworld). The dashing Captain Phoebus rescues Esmeralda from Quasimodo, while Jehan abandons him and flees. Lester Dwervick (Tim Young) has always been sort of different. The sickly teen is too shy to make friends, and lives in a trailer park. Because of these reasons, his classmates and teacher view him as a "white trash outcast". To make matters worse, Lester's mother is an alcoholic tramp who often brings home drunken men from the local bars. Lester has nobody to confide in, and often draws and sculpts birds and other animals to keep him hopeful of the future. One day, he is being savagely tormented by a local bully when Sheriff Patterson's (Richard Elfman) daughter Judie (Tiffany Shepis) sticks up for him. Thinking he has finally found a friend, Lester begins to feel happy for the first time in years and begins to draw pictures for her. One night, Lester goes to find Judie to ask her if she wants to be his girlfriend. Before he even has a chance to ask her, he sees his worst bully drunkenly kiss her. Judie sees Lester, who is running away in grief. Knowing there's nothing left for him anymore, the pressure of it all finally mounts and Lester swirls into a jealous rage and screams at his mother's latest boyfriend. He chases Lester into the cornfields outside his home and viciously strangles him to death then hangs him, making it look like a suicide, leaving his corpse near a scarecrow.

À Paris, élevé seul par sa mère, Pablo est un garçon de 11 ans mûr et débrouillard. Encore une fois livré à lui-même quand sa mère s'absente un week-end entier pour rejoindre un nouvel amant, il décide de prendre son destin en main et de retrouver son père dont il ne sait pas grand-chose d'autre que son prénom et sa ville de naissance en Espagne. Il échafaude un plan : dans un café qu'il fréquente, il a remarqué Louis, un joueur de poker désargenté mais qui a une voiture et avec lequel il sympathise. Il lui propose l'argent qu'il a volé à sa mère pour être son chauffeur dans son expédition en Espagne. Après des hésitations, ce dernier accepte et le périple mouvementé des deux acolytes commence, émaillé de disputes et de moments de complicité.
