Au début du XVIII siècle, le Chhatrapati Shahu (Mahesh Manjrekar) requiert les services d'un nouveau peshwa, réel détenteur du pouvoir politique et militaire dans l'Empire marathe. Bien que Panth Pratinidhi (Aditya Pancholi) se désigne pour assurer cette fonction, le ministre Ambaji Panth (Milind Soman) choisit de nommer le jeune Bajirao (Ranveer Singh). Afin de tester sa sagesse spirituelle et sa maîtrise des armes, Silpa défie Bajirao de sectionner une plume de paon avec une flèche. Bajirao réussit et se voit attribuer le titre de Shrimant Peshwa. Dix ans plus tard, la femme de Bajirao, Kashi Bai (Priyanka Chopra), rend visite à son amie Bhanu, veuve depuis l'exécution de son mari accusé d'espionnage. In a Gujarati village, Ranjaar, infamous for its uninhibited manufacture and sale of arms and ammunition (weapons are sold like vegetables at the place), two clans, Rajadi and Sanera, have been at odds with each other for the past 500 years. The film opens with a violent altercation between the two over petty matters. Meghji (Abhimanyu Singh), a Rajadi head, sets out to kill Bhavani (Gulshan Devaiah) who is a Sanera, after the latter tries to kill the former's son. Bhavani is almost killed but Ram (Ranveer Singh), Meghji's younger brother, intervenes and saves him, only to be reprimanded by Meghji. All the Rajadi elders are irked by Ram's mindset of making truce with the other clan.

In 1995, during the Kashmir conflict, Hilaal Meer, a doctor, agrees to perform an appendectomy on the leader of a pro-separatist group. To avoid detection, he performs the surgery at his house, much to the chagrin of his wife Ghazala, who questions his allegiance. The following day, during a military raid, Hilaal is accused of harbouring terrorists. A shootout ensues at his home, during which the leader of the separatist group is killed and Hilaal is taken away for questioning. The doctor's house is bombed subsequently to kill any other militant hiding inside. Several days later, Hilaal and Ghazala's son, Haider, returns from his university to seek answers about his father's disappearance. Upon arrival, he is shocked to find his mother singing and laughing along with her brother-in-law, Khurram. Unable to understand his mother's behaviour, he begins searching for his father in various police stations and detention camps with the help of his fiancee Arshia, a journalist.

A humanoid alien (Aamir Khan) lands on Earth naked on a research mission in Rajasthan, but is stranded when the remote control of his spaceship is stolen, though he manages to get the thief's cassette recorder, a National Panasonic RQ-565D. The story is narrated by Gulabji (Rani Mukerji), a prostitute who frequents RK Bar, the town's most luxurious club.
