Pattalam (Malayalam : പട്ടാളം) is a 2003 Malayalam film by Lal Jose starring Mammootty and Biju Menon with Jagathy Sreekumar, Oduvil Unnikrishnan, Innocent and Jyothirmai in supporting roles. This film revolves around incidents in a small village after the army sets up a temporary camp. This film was a financially hit.

Synopsis

An Army unit comes to a local village in Kerala because of a terror threat. The unit is led by Major Pattabhiraman (Mammootty) and commander Benny (Biju Menon). The Major sees a widow named Vimala (Tessa) singing. Vimala is living in her husband's home after his death. A village girl Satyabhama (Jyothirmayi) and Benny fall in love and elope. Pattabhiraman discovers that a terrorist has placed a bomb in a water tank. He finds the terrorist and defuses the bomb. Benny reveals to Vimala that Pattabhiraman killed her husband Nandu (Indrajith) in the war. The Major admits the fact, but claims he did it as a mercy killing because Nandu was so badly injured. Vimala forgives him and the couple happily unites.

The film narrates the story of "Cuba" Mukundan (Sreenivasan) . He is a staunch leftist who lives for the movement. Machinations of a corrupt politician Karunan (Guruvayoor Sivaji) who perceives Mukundan as a threat to his political career force Mukundan to take up a job in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Even in Dubai, he finds that Kunjunny Muthalaly (Jagathy Sreekumar) who was in league with Karunan is in Dubai, exploiting the helpless labourers who migrate to the Gulf performing menial jobs and physical labor in order to support their families back home. Later even after realising that she is an anti communist and is there to make money for the treatment of her boyfriend who fought against the Chinese Government, he gives her his earnings saying a communist never keeps money more than his requirements. Mukundan, with the help of his friends Anwar, Maya, and Karim, exposes the machinations of Karunan and Kunjunny Muthalaly. Finally Mukundan returns home to work for the political cause which has been his life and love.

The film begins with Police Officer Jeevan(Biju Menon) taking charge of Mangalore city Police. He learns from his suboridinate Sudhakaran Nair(Sadiq) that the city is still ruled by underworld don Govindji (Thilakan). Navaneeth Krishnan a.k.a. Kishanji (Suresh Gopi) is Govindji's lead henchman. Govindji acts as a sort of Godfather to him. Kishan has a face-off with Jeevan and Jeevan gets injured in the fight. Jeevan later is surprised to see Kishan during a train journey but it turns out that it is Ananthakrishnan a.k.a. Ananthu (Suresh Gopi), Kishan's identical twin; who unlike Kishan is a well educated and righteous person. Jeevan visits their family home in Kerala to confirm the facts. He learns that Kishan, despite being from a well-off family and being topper at school, ran off during his teenage and joined the gangs of Mangalore owing to a punishing father(Narendra Prasad). Jeevan also meets Kishen's uncle(Nedumudi Venu) and his daughter Manikkutty(Lena) who is Ananthu's fiancee.
