Jacques Mazel, the son of a wealthy merchant, and Patricia Amoretti, daughter of a well-digger, live in a small village in the Provence region of France while Europe is at the brink of World War I. She has just turned 18 and is smitten with the handsome Jacques when he carries her across a stream to bring lunch to her father who is digging a well. After their second encounter Jacques, a French Air Force pilot, is unexpectedly reassigned. He must leave immediately to replace a pilot who recently broke his leg. Because he cannot meet Patricia as planned the next morning, he leaves an explanatory letter for her but his overly protective mother burns the letter. Patricia concludes Jacques rejected her because they come from different social classes. Later, Patricia discovers that Jacques has left her with child. The parents of Jacques reject the idea that their son conceived a child out of wedlock and refuse to acknowledge the baby. Her father, who had idolized her, sends Patricia to live with his sister in another village to spare his four other daughters from learning of the illegitimate child. Patricia declines an offer of marriage from her father's friend, Félipe, partly because her younger sister, Amanda, has a crush on him. Eventually, Jacques, who was thought to have been shot down by the Germans, returns from a POW camp and learns he has a son., 1h31

In 1928, a globally famous illusionist, Wei Ling Soo, performs in front of a crowd in Berlin with his world-class magic act. As he walks off stage the film audience sees that he is actually a British man named Stanley (Colin Firth). He berates his employees and is generally curmudgeonly towards his well-wishers. In his dressing-room, he is greeted by old friend and fellow illusionist Howard Burkan (Simon McBurney). Howard enlists Stanley to go with him to the Côte d'Azur where a rich American family, the Catledges, has apparently been taken in by a clairvoyant and mystic, Sophie (Emma Stone). In fact, the son of the family, Brice (Hamish Linklater), is smitten with Sophie, and his sister Caroline (Erica Leerhsen) and brother-in-law George (Jeremy Shamos) are concerned Brice is considering proposing marriage. Howard says that he has been unable to uncover the secrets behind her tricks and he admits that the more he watched her the more he believed she really has supernatural powers. So he would like Stanley, who has debunked charlatan mystics in the past, to help him prove she is a fraud., 2h20

The bulk of the story takes place in Monaco. Charming attractive Alex (Romain Duris), his sister Mélanie (Julie Ferrier), and her husband Marc (François Damiens), operate a unique business for concerned third-party clients—breaking up relationships, but only where the woman is "not knowingly unhappy." The trio concoct elaborate, custom, and sometimes expensive ruses to deceive the women. After each woman has fallen for his act, Alex tells her she has made him come alive again, but that it is too late for him. The women presumably leave their relationships to seek men who make them feel the way Alex has., 1h21
