Après avoir disparu pendant une semaine, Phillip, le fis de 13 ans d'Astrid, rentre à la maison sans dire un mot. Sa mère et ses enseignants soupçonnent tous que sa disparition pourrait être liée à la perte de son père. Ce n'est que progressivement que la vie quotidienne se remet sur les rails. Astrid se trouve maintenant confrontée à des questions qui donnent une toute nouvelle perspective à son existence et à sa carrière dans le secteur culturel berlinois. Ses idées sur l'art commencent également à changer. À la maison, il est de plus en plus difficile pour cette mère célibataire d’accepter que son fils mène sa propre vie. Puis, Phillip est admis à l'hôpital avec une intoxication. Astrid est anéantie par l'inquiétude, la culpabilité et son sentiment d'échec. Mais Phillip et sa petite sœur ne se détournent pas d'elle. La famille n'est peut-être pas en train de se désintégrer mais seulement de se reformer.

Beni, age 15, becomes enamoured with a singer from the rock band "The Minks", Fögi Müller, who is ten years older than him. Fögi ensnares him with the perceived glamor of being a musician, takes him on as the band's 'roadie', and at the same time seduces him. Beni unquestionably follows him, including following him into drug addiction. Beni's youthful innocence is destroyed in a milieu of sex, drinking, drugs, and rock-and-roll. He ends up prostituting himself to pay for Fögi's drug habit.

Peter Huber (Peter Kern), the proprietor of a Bavarian corner newsstand, wins a free trip to New York City in a magazine contest, he is overjoyed. Filled with romantic ideas from the movies, his actual encounter with the gritty realities of the Big Apple are sobering. Nonetheless, he is in for the adventure of his life. First, he meets Karola Faber (Barbara Valentin), the German wife of a U.S. G.I. who has found life in the States not all it’s cracked up to be: she has left her husband and makes her living through prostitution. Peter and Karola visit the local German émigré community’s Oktoberfest, and win the festival’s King and Queen crown. Their prize is a cow, which accompanies them on their further journeys in New York City.
