Pooja Phalam is a 1964 Telugu language film starring Akkineni Nageswara Rao, Savitri and Jamuna directed by B. N. Reddy.

Synopsis

Madhu also called Chinnababu (Akkineni Nageswara Rao) a zamindar's son is very gullible who every one laughs at. One day he meets a girl Vasanthi (Jamuna) who stays in a portion of his house. Vasanthi becomes very friendly with Madhu and behaves very close to him as she sees Madhu just as a brother and nothing else where as in Madhu mistakens Vasanthi's friendly nature to love. One day Madhu has to leave to Chennai for higher studies. He writes letters but he never get any reply from Vasanthi to any of his letters. When he comes back he finds out Vasanthi and her family left the city without telling anybody. Madhu finds a letter from which he realizes that Vasanthi only saw him as a brother. He gets very depressed and falls sick. Seetha (Savitri), Ramakrishnaiah (Gummadi)'s daughter takes care of Madhu by taking care of his health and giving him company. The whole story is how he recovers from the depression he faces because of Vasanthi.

The plot of the film is based on the concept of Reincarnation and a beautiful love story. Newly married couple Gopinath (Akkineni) and Radha (Savitri) are on Honeymoon and traveling in a boat in River Godavari. Gopinath cries to the boatman to stop the boat as there were dangerous Whirlpools ahead. On reaching the shores, Gopinath takes Radha to an old building. The boatman tells them that it belonged to a Zamindar and takes them to the Samadhis, which reportedly belong to that of one Gopi and Radha. They, then, find an old lady lighting deepam at the Samadhis. Gopinath recognises that she is none other than Gowri from his earlier birth. Gowri too recognised him as Gopi and breaths her last in his hands. The main story is narrated as flashback by Gopinath to Radha.

Gundamma (Suryakantam) is a rich widow who has a daughter Saroja (Jamuna Ramanarao), and son Prabhakar (Haranath) and a step daughter Lakshmi (Savitri). Both the girls are beautiful and intelligent. Saroja is a teen spoiled by her mother's pampering whereas Lakshmi is treated as a servant in her own house. Ramabhadraiah (S. V. Ranga Rao), who has two sons of marriageable age, is searching for suitable brides. Gundamma is interested in pursuing an alliance with Ramabhadraiah’s family for her daughter Saroja and sends a word through a middle man. It happens that he used to be a good friend of Gundamma's late husband. She wants to overcome the obstacle of her elder step daughter by getting her married to a down-and-out guy so she doesn’t have to get jeered for neglecting her step daughter. Kanchu Gantaiah (Ramana Reddy), Gundamma's manager and a cousin somehow wants Saroja to marry his son Bhupati (Rajanala) who happens to be a delinquent and is in a prison.

Anuradha loves Murali in college, but keeps to herself. She becomes victim of her classmate Sarala's jealousy and trickery and complains about Murali to Principal. The event results in hatred between them and Murali losing scholarship. Murali gets help from his uncle Lingaiah and goes to London for higher studies. Lingaiah in return plans to give his daughter Lakshmi to Murali upon his return. Lingaiah appoints Anuradha as care taker of innocent Lakshmi. Anuradha comes to know about their plan and sacrifices her love for her cousin Lakshmi. Lakshmi has different plans; She is in love with her brother in law Yoganandam and not interested in Murali. She asks Anuradha to write replies to Murali's letters on her behalf. Anuradha goes through lot of struggle in the process.
