This film is a recording of the Royal National Theatre production of the play Primo, also directed by Wilson. Adapted by Antony Sher from If This Is A Man by Primo Levi, it is a monologue told as a memoir by an older Primo looking back at his life in Auschwitz.
Set designer Hildegard Bechtler devised a symbolist set consisting of a single bare wall and a lone chair with variations in lighting.
British composer, Jonathan Goldstein, was nominated for an Ivor Novello award for the score to the film.
Wilson and Sher travelled to Auschwitz whilst researching the play. Sher was confined in the back of a lorry and German actors were hired to shout out orders to him in order to give him some feel of the powerlessness and confusion Levi experienced during his incarceration. Sher said that he found the play terribly draining; he refused to extend the play or to tour with it.
A further film of the RNT stage production was made by director Robin Lough.
Synopsis
Sur ses vieux jours, l'écrivain italien Primo Levi, qui a été interné dans le camp de concentration d'Auschwitz en 1944, se remémore sa captivité et les horreurs qu'il a vues et subies. Il repense aux privations, aux mauvais traitements, aux tortures, aux morts par milliers. Il s'interroge également sur la manière de survivre après avoir été victime de ces atrocités. Certaines marques, comme le numéro qui a été tatoué sur son bras par les nazis, restent gravés dans son corps comme dans sa mémoire. Un téléfilm sobre et poignant, tiré du récit «Si c'est un homme», de Primo Levi.Actors

Several screens of text giving some background are shown before a bust is shown flying over a palace wall and shattering into countless pieces. The film shows the story of a bereaved Queen Victoria (Judi Dench) and her relationship with a Scottish servant, John Brown (Billy Connolly), and the subsequent uproar it provoked. The film opens with on-screen text stating: "A true story". It is August 1941, and Nazi Einsatzgruppen are sweeping through Eastern Europe, systematically killing Jews. Among the survivors not killed or restricted to ghettoes are the Polish Jewish Bielski brothers: Tuvia (Daniel Craig), Zus (Liev Schreiber), Asael (Jamie Bell), and Aron (George MacKay). The Third Half depicts the history of 7,148 Macedonian Jews who were deported to the gas chambers of Treblinka by the Bulgarian administrative and military authorities, who were cooperating with the Nazi regime. Strangers opens in Berlin during the 2006 FIFA World Cup. The Israeli Defense Minister Israel Navon (Doron Tavory) moves to a house on the border between Israel and the West Bank, with the building sitting on the Israeli side just next to the dividing line.
