In faraway tropical Mosaque, as soon as American pilot Dan Kendall {Richard Arlen) joins the country's Air Corps, he is in trouble. It is Monday morning in the Bronx; two deadbeat punks: Joe Ferrante (Tony Musante) and Artie Connors (Martin Sheen) are causing trouble. After giving a hard time to a pool hall owner for closing early interrupting their game, then briefly harassing a passing couple on the street, then finally mugging an old man for his eight dollars and beating him into unconsciousness, they board the last car of a New York City Subway train and psychologically terrorize the passengers who cannot move to another carriage (it would later be shown that the door at the other end of the car is stuck closed).

Advertising executive Roger O. Jean-Claude (25) and Pierrot (23) are young sociopathic men who travel around France, committing petty crimes and running from the law. After they get in trouble with a hairdresser in Valence for stealing his car, they grab his pistol and kidnap his assistant Marie-Ange, an apathetic girl. When they are bored with unorgasmic Marie-Ange, they decide to find a passionate woman and meet Jeanne Pirolle, a deranged woman in her forties who is just released from prison and had spent ten years in a cell. After a threesome, Jeanne commits suicide and the men return to Marie-Ange. They find Jeanne's psychopathic son Jacques who had been incarcerated as well. Then, the four consider founding a crime family but at their first crime, an attempted robbery, Jacques commits a revenge killing and the others flee. While on the run, they meet a family having a picnic near Col d'Izoard and the delinquent teenage daughter Jacqueline wants to join them. They take Jacqueline and on learning that she is still a virgin, they decide to deflower her. After dropping Jacqueline, the three ride away aimlessly.

Kees Popinga est fondé de pouvoir chez un marchand hollandais de fourniture de bateaux à Groningue avec une femme et deux enfants il s'est peu à peu enfoncé dans l'ennui. Il décide de fuir son univers un peu mesquin et de faire des avances à Pamela, la maîtresse de son patron. Celle-ci ne l'accueillant qu'avec un rire moqueur, Kees, blessé dans son amour propre, la tue en voulant la faire taire. Il n'a alors plus d'autre solution que de quitter la Hollande, il s'enfuit donc à Paris. Ce sera pour lui l'occasion de vivre une vie en complète opposition avec son existence petite-bourgeoise qu'il a connu jusqu'alors. Il côtoie prostituées et petits malfrats, jusqu'à se faire dévaliser par un pick-pocket. Après une tentative de suicide manquée qui le livre nu aux mains de la police, il se retrouve interné en hôpital psychiatrique.

Cyrus, leader of the Gramercy Riffs, the most powerful gang in New York City, calls a midnight summit of all New York area gangs, requesting them to send nine unarmed delegates to Van Cortlandt Park. The Warriors, from Coney Island, attend the summit. Cyrus proposes to the assembled crowd a permanent citywide truce and alliance that would allow the gangs to control the city. Most of the gangs laud his idea, but Luther, leader of the Rogues, shoots Cyrus dead. In the resulting chaos, Luther frames the Warriors' leader Cleon for the murder, and Cleon is beaten down by the Riffs. Meanwhile, the other Warriors have escaped, unaware that they've been implicated in Cyrus' murder. The Riffs put out a hit on the Warriors through a radio DJ. Swan, the Warriors' "war chief", takes charge of the group as they try to make it back home.

In 1931, China is embroiled in a civil war. Friends of British Captain Donald "Doc" Harvey (Clive Brook) envy him because the fabulously notorious Shanghai Lily (Marlene Dietrich) is a fellow passenger on the express train from Beiping to Shanghai. Since the name means nothing to him, they inform him that she is a "coaster" or "woman who lives by her wits along the China coast" – in other words, a courtesan. On the journey, Harvey encounters Lily, who turns out to be his former lover, Magdalen. Five years earlier, she had played a trick on Harvey to gauge his love for her, but it backfired and he left her. She frankly informs him that, in the interim, "It took more than one man to change my name to Shanghai Lily." When Lily makes it clear that she still cares deeply for him, it becomes apparent that his feelings also have not changed, and he shows her the watch she gave him with her photograph still in it.
