David Shaber (1929 - November 4, 1999) was an American screenwriter and theatre producer, who wrote the screenplays for The Warriors, Nighthawks, Rollover, The Last Embrace and Flight of the Intruder. He also wrote the final draft, though uncredited, for the John McTiernan film The Hunt for Red October. However his most celebrated film, a cult favorite, is his semi-autobiographical reminiscence about a summer stock company in the 1950s, set in the fictional Ohio town of Kempton Hills, Those Lips, Those Eyes, released in 1980; the film starred Frank Langella and Thomas Hulce and was directed by Michael Pressman. Shaber also authored a novel based on the screenplay (Dell, 1980), though he was personally loath to call it a "novelization," as it was written from the first person perspective of its main character and contained much additional material that was cut from the finished film as well as created specifically for the book.

Shaber was born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio, and abandoned a pre-med education for the Yale Drama School. He wrote and produced plays, and also wrote forty commissioned screenplays, eight of which were made into feature films, in the 1970s and 1980s. In the 1990s, he taught advanced screenwriting at Columbia University in New York City.

Shaber has two daughters, Remy Shaber (dancer) and Sam Shaber (musician).

He died on November 4, 1999 at Mount Sinai Hospital in Manhattan of an aneurysm, at age 70.

Cyrus, leader of the Gramercy Riffs, the most powerful gang in New York City, calls a midnight summit of all New York area gangs, requesting them to send nine unarmed delegates to Van Cortlandt Park. The Warriors, from Coney Island, attend the summit. Cyrus proposes to the assembled crowd a permanent citywide truce and alliance that would allow the gangs to control the city. Manhattanite Julie Messinger, a complacent housewife and mother of two raucous young sons, is married to Richard, a chauvinistic and self-centered magazine art director and author of a best-selling children's book. When he falls into a coma during minor surgery to remove a nonmalignant mole on his neck, Julie learns from his doctor, Dr. Timmy Spector, that another surgeon nicked his artery, necessitating a blood transfusion to which he had a rare allergic reaction. The following day, Julie is told Richard has overcome the reaction, but his liver has sustained serious damage requiring immediate treatment. In quick succession, all his organs begin to fail.
