It is based on a Marathi novel Andharachya Parambya by Jaywant Dalvi, on which he also wrote the play Barrister. The film set in small rural town in Maharashtra in early 19th century, and deals with clash of progressives and orthodox traditions, while depicting plight of women especially widows in traditional Indian society under feudalism and oppressive patriarchy. The film starred Anupam Kher, Vijaya Mehta, Nilu Phule, and Tanvi Azmi.
At the 33rd National Film Awards for 1985 films, the film won two awards; Best Supporting Actress for Vijaya Mehta, while Sham Bhutkar won the award for Best Art Direction.
Synopsis
A young barrister Rao Saheb return from England after education, with progressive ideas. He plans to break the orthodox customs of Brahmin society. He live in his old mansion in a small town in rural Maharashtra, where situation hasn't changed. His lives with his orthodox father and widowed aunty, Mausi, who has befriended, a young widow Radhika in a neighbouring home. Radhika rebels against the patriarchal customs imposed on widows at the time. Rao Saheb empathizes with her and comes close her, while his Mausi also fights for modernity by trying save Rahika from the shackles of widowhood.Actors

The film is an intimate look into the life and manners of the Parsi community especially those living in the city of Bombay (now Mumbai) in the 1950s and 60s. Phirojshah (Naseeruddin Shah) and Pestonjee (Anupam Kher) are close friends. They like to do everything together (and even plan to get married on the same day), even though they are very different in temperament. Phirojshah (Phiroj) is quiet, thoughtful, and indecisive, while Pestonjee (Pesi) is an extrovert. Phiroj is unable to make up his mind about marrying a girl, Jeroo (Shabana Azmi), selected for him by a matchmaker. It is Pesi who ends up marrying her. Phiroj has fallen in love with her, but does not grudge Pesi his happiness. He decides not to marry, and moves to another city. They keep in touch by mail. Phiroj is delighted to hear that they are expecting a baby. He decides to travel to Bombay to visit them. During his visit, Phiroj learns that the married life of Pesi and Jeroo is not as he had imagined it. Jeroo has had a miscarriage. Phiroj is horrified to discover that Pesi has a mistress. He is saddened by how Jeroo has changed. She is no longer the pretty girl she was, but appears cantankerous and uncaring. Both she and Pesi are unhappy in their marriage. Phiroj resolves not to meet them, but mentally is unable to keep himself aloof. All three carry on with their unhappy lives until Pesi's sudden death. Finally, Phiroj discovers that he cannot help Jeroo. Soona, Pesi's mistress whom Phirojshah had thought of as a loose woman, turns out to be the one person capable of genuine love.

Anjaana Anjaani is the story of Kiara (Priyanka Chopra) and Akash (Ranbir Kapoor). Kiara is based in San Francisco, while Akash is a New York City boy. Akash has to clear a loan of $12 million, which he is unable to partly due to the stock market crash. Unable to find any means, suicide seems the only option. He decides to jump off the George Washington Bridge. This is when he meets Kiara, who is also bound to commit suicide because she caught her fiancé Kunal (Zayed Khan) cheating on her. They both try to put an end to their lives but are deterred by the coastguards. Still keen on ending their lives, Akash deliberately gets hit by a car and Kiara falls on the bridge and breaks her neck. This proves to be yet another failed attempt and they end up in the hospital together. Kiara takes Akash to her house as his house was seized by the bank.

Kiran (Juhi Chawla) is a college student who is on her way home for Holi break one year when she hears a man serenading her across the campus in Simla. Vijay (Sunil Shetty) sole ambition is to become a collector like his father was. He is concentrating completely on his studies except for a few disturbances by Pooja (Anjali Jathar) who loves him and wants to marry him. Vijay always believed that his parents were in fact murdered and not killed in an accident, by their old faithful security officer Babu (Danny Denzongpa). Vijay starts searching for Babu, and finally when he finds him, Babu tells him that he was merely used as a pawn to cover up his parent's murder and the actual killer is roaming scot free, and only one man can lead Vijay to the killer and that is Girdhari (Lalit Tiwari) in Khandala. But before Vijay can find the truth, Girdhari is killed. Vijay and Babu start working in a casino owned by Shanti Prasad (Anupam Kher). There the local don Rana (Mohan Joshi) becomes their enemy, who is after Shanti Prasad's casino and Vijay's life. Finally when Vijay decides to leave Khandala, he comes to know of the actual murderers. Vijay loses Babu in the fight. Now Vijay is all-alone to fight with his enemies.

Jab Pyaar Kisise Hota Hai is about Sooraj Dhanrajgir (Salman Khan), a rich playboy lightening the financial burden of his industrialist grandfather (Anupam Kher) by spending his riches on alcohol and women. Breakaway, or Speedy Singhs (the Hindi version of the movie), is the story of Rajveer Singh (Vinay Virmani), a young and dedicated teenager who gave up college half-way through due to his lack of interest, one of the many conflicts between him and his father Darvesh. Rajveer and Darvesh had never gotten along; though the family is Sikh, due to a childhood incident, Rajveer has taken his turban off since a very small age.
