Synopsis
Après avoir été mis K.O. par Cassius Clay, le boxeur poids lourd Louis Rivera doit raccrocher aux gants en raison d'une grave blessure à l'œil. Aidé de son soigneur Army, il se lance à la recherche d'un travail. Il rencontre alors une assistante sociale qui se prend d'affection pour lui et qui lui propose de devenir moniteur dans un camp de vacances. Mais la situation s'avère difficile lorsque son entraîneur, qui est criblé de dettes, le pousse à se convertir en catcheur...Actors

Le sergent Eustis Clay (Steve McQueen), esprit un peu simplet, a pour ami le sergent Maxwell Slaughter (Jackie Gleason). S'ennuyant à mourir dans leur caserne, ils envisagent, pour la vie civile, des projets abracadabrants. Maxwell se fait présenter à une jeune fille immature, Bobby Jo Pepperdine (Tuesday Weld )qui d'abord se moque de lui en raison de son obésité, puis finit par admirer son intelligence et sa culture. Cependant Maxwell ne se fait pas d'illusion sur la suite de cette relation platonique avec la jeune fille et se résigne à rester vieux garçon. Au cours d'une bagarre dans un bar, opposant Eustis à deux sous-officiers sadiques, Maxwell venu défendre son copain, est victime d'un malaise cardiaque et décède, peu de temps après, à l’hôpital après une ultime visite que lui fait Eustis. Resté seul et déboussolé, ce dernier signe un nouveau contrat pour rester dans l'armée.

Cagney plays a truck driver named Danny Kenny, who starts as a New York boxing contender. Ann Sheridan plays his girlfriend, Peggy. Being successful as a boxer, Danny decides to financially help his brother Eddie (Arthur Kennedy) to become a professional musician. Peggy on the other hand, loses her heart to Murray Burns (Anthony Quinn), a professional dancer, and she turns down Danny's proposal in order to go for a dancing career. Embittered by Peggy's refusal, Danny continues to work as a boxer and eventually gets blinded by his opponent during a fight, who has placed some rosin dust onto his gloves. Now blind, Danny works as a newspaper stand operator, while Peggy's career as a dancer did not materialize. The movie ends with Eddie becoming a successful composer who dedicates his first major symphony at Carnegie Hall to his brother, who is listening to the concert on the radio from his newsstand.

Cricket West (Garland) is a hopeful actress with a pair of vocal cords that bring down the house.
