Anna vient de faire sa première semaine de travail de sa vie et a son premier salaire : un billet de dix marks avec le numéro de registre K 13513. Andreas, son compagnon, le marque d'une croix et Anna le confie à sa mère qui le cache dans une bible. Robert, le frère d'Anna, vole le billet et achète avec ce billet un couteau avec lequel il commet un meurtre. Par la suite, la mère tente de se suicider et Anna perd son emploi. Le mobilier est menacé d'être saisi. Elle parle de ses difficultés financières au riche directeur Haniel qui, sous de bonnes actions, a des motifs inavouables. Quand Anna découvre les véritables intentions de Haniel, elle prend la fuite avec Andreas qui vend sa bicyclette pour racheter les meubles d'Anna. Lors de la vente de la bicyclette, il récupère le billet de dix marks d'Anna. C'est un signe qu'ils doivent rester ensemble.

The story centres on an immense golden bell named The Mother of Voices, which may or may not exist. Moorish king Aly Mansuh (Sidney Poitier) is convinced that it does. Having collected all the legendary material about it that he can, he plans to mount an expedition to search for it. When the shipwrecked Norseman, Rolfe (Richard Widmark), repeats the story of the bell in the marketplace, and hints that he knows its location, he is seized by Mansuh's men and brought in for questioning. Rolfe insists that he does not know and that the bell is only a myth. He manages to escape before the questioning continues under torture.

The film focuses on a run-down boarding house in London, home to an assorted group of residents. Many of them cling precariously to their social positions with only one figure, the wealthy self-made businessman Mr Wright, being truly successful. The house is owned by the grasping Mrs Sharpe, who mistreats the maid, Stasia, a rehabilitated juvenile delinquent. The various members of the household are miserable and openly sneering and rude towards each other, the one exception being the respect shown by all to the powerful Mr Wright. In the case of one couple, Major Tomkin and his wife, this involves pressuring their daughter Vivian to marry Wright in spite of her obvious horror at the idea.

The young revolutionary Nelson Mandela is arrested, and it is the task of censor James Gregory to watch him. He has long since moved to South Africa with the family for his work in the prison of Robben Island, and slowly he clashes with the politics and racist culture of his countrymen and the people of his own race. Gregory begins to express hatred for South African apartheid. The film begins in Alexandria with Cleopatra VII, Egypt's rightful Queen, in exile, while her sister Arsinoe and brother, Ptolemy have stolen the throne. Roman general Julius Caesar comes to collect Egypt's tax debt. After conversing with a courtesan, Cleopatra smuggles herself into the palace wrapped in a carpet; a gift from her to Caesar. He accepts the gift and the young queen is revealed to Caesar. The two spend the night together, and the next morning, Cleopatra and Ptolemy are betrothed to marry by Caesar. Shortly after the siblings are wed, Cleopatra is proclaimed Queen of Egypt, forcing Ptolemy to join forces with Arsinoe and drive their sister out of Alexandria.
