Synopsis
Dublin O'Malley, un ancien artiste de cirque aigri, revient sur les lieux de son ancien travail afin de se venger de son employeur et d'une femme. Les crimes et les accidents qu'il commet, déguisés en accident, inquiètent le personnel qui commence à croire le cirque hanté. Le directeur, Clyde Beatty, fait alors appel à Mickey Spillane pour résoudre l'énigme. Spillane ne tarde pas à découvrir le véritable auteur de ces méfaits...Actors

Lilly Turner est une jeune fille naïve qui tombe amoureuse d'hommes malhonnêtes. Elle se marie à Rex Durkee, un minable magicien dans un cirque itinérant, et sillonne les routes avec lui et sa troupe. Après quelques mois, elle découvre que ce dernier est déjà marié à une autre femme. Pour éviter un procès en bigamie, Rex quitte Lilly sans aucun remords alors qu'elle attend un enfant. Pour lui trouver un père, Lilly se met en couple avec un rabatteur forain, Dave Dixon, et l'épouse. L'accouchement se déroule mal et le bébé est mort né. Dave devient alcoolique et Lilly sombre dans la dépression. Lilly tombe amoureuse d'un autre homme, Bob Chandler, ingénieur et chauffeur de taxi tandis que Fritz, un artiste musculeux du cirque, tombe sous le charme de la jeune fille en détresse... In 1851, Roy Whitman (John McIntire) decides to bring marriageable women west to California to join the lonely men of Whitman's Valley, hoping the couples will put down roots and settle there. Roy hires a skeptical, experienced wagon master, Buck Wyatt (Robert Taylor), to lead the wagon train along the California Trail. In Chicago, Roy recruits 138 "good women", after they have been warned of the journey's hardships and dangers by Buck, who flatly states up to a third of them might not survive the journey. The women range from Patience (Hope Emerson), an older widow from New Bedford seeking a new start after losing her sea captain husband and sons when their clipper went down while attempting to round Cape Horn, to Rose Meyers (Beverly Dennis), a pregnant, unmarried woman running from her shame. Telling the women about his valley, Roy encourages them to pick their prospective mates from daguerreotype pictures he has tacked to a display board. Two showgirls, Fifi Danon (Denise Darcel) and Laurie Smith (Julie Bishop), hastily change their flashy clothes when others like them are rejected and return to try and sign on again. Whitman is not fooled by their disguise, but convinced their wish to reform is sincere he adds them to the group, bringing the number of women on the wagon train up to 140.

Helga Ohlin (Greta Garbo) is an illegitimate child raised in an abusive home. In Honolulu, a DC-4 airliner prepares to take off for San Francisco with 17 passengers and a crew of 5. Former captain Dan Roman (John Wayne), the flight's veteran first officer known for his habit of whistling, is haunted by a crash that killed his wife and son and left him with a permanent limp. The captain, Sullivan (Robert Stack), suffers from a secret fear of responsibility after logging thousands of hours looking after the lives of passengers and crew.
