Susan Lenox (Her Fall and Rise) is a 1931 American Pre-Code film starring Greta Garbo and Clark Gable, based on the novel by David Graham Phillips. The film was made by MGM and was directed and produced by Robert Z. Leonard. This was the only film in which Greta Garbo was paired with Clark Gable. The notoriety of the novel alone was enough for British censors to ban it from release. With a few cuts it was finally approved in the UK with a new title: The Rise of Helga.
Synopsis
Helga Ohlin (Greta Garbo) is an illegitimate child raised in an abusive home. Her family arranges for her to marry a lout, Jeb Mondstrum (Alan Hale), but she runs away and meets Rodney Spencer (Clark Gable), an architect who is renting a cabin down the road from her family's farm. When Rodney leaves the cabin, her father and Jeb find her. She runs away again and joins a circus as a dancer; she now calls herself Susan Lenox. She meets Rodney, but they have a misunderstanding and he leaves. She runs away to New York and becomes the mistress of Mike Kelly (Hale Hamilton), a politician; she meets Rodney again, but they have another misunderstanding and split. Susan then searches and finds him in South America, and finally they end up together.Actors

Janie Barlow (Joan Crawford) is a young dancer who is reduced to stripping in a burlesque show. Arrested for indecent exposure, she's bailed out by millionaire playboy Tod Newton (Franchot Tone), who was attracted to her while slumming at the theatre with his society pals. When she tries to get a part in a Broadway musical, Tod intercedes with director Patch Gallagher (Clark Gable) to get her the job: he'll put his money into the show, if Janie is given a part in the chorus. Le duo apprend vite d'une prophétie à propos d'une petite fille née sur terre, bénie du coeur d'une sirène. Avec cette prophétie venue à la vie dans Elle, ils sont de plus enchevêtrés dans un complot sinistre d'un sorcier qui souhaite garder l'âme de la sirène et la convertir au pouvoir.
