Nobleza baturra (The Nobility of the Peasantry, also known as Aragonese Virtue) is a 1935 Spanish musical drama film directed by Florián Rey, and starring Imperio Argentina, Miguel Ligero Rodríguez, and Juan de Orduña, based on the play by the playwright Joaquín Dicenta. The film was a phenomenal success, and one of the most commercially successful films of the Second Republic. The film was made by CIFESA at CEA Studios. The film was noted for its folkloric type characters and sentimental views of rural peoples.

Synopsis

The film, set in Aragon in the early twentieth century, tells the story of María del Pilar (Imperio Argentina), an honest girl, whose good name is tarnished when a former suitor, out of spite of being rejected, publicizes throughout the village that she had sex outside of marriage. Slander soon spreads throughout the region.

The movie takes place in Seville in 1835. Carmen, a gypsy woman, intends to enter the barracks to give Antonio Vargas Heredia some tobacco. Thanks to a favor from Brigadier José, she gets to see the “torero”. In return Carmen offers the soldier the carnation in her hair. But not without informing everyone that she will sing at Mulero’s tavern that night. José comes go to see her. While Carmen sings, another woman steals the carnation José was given by the gipsy before.

The film is essentially a two-part program. The first half consists of a romantic comedy storyline involving an aerialist, played by Gene Kelly, who is drafted into the US Army but really wants to join the air force. During training, he falls in love with Kathryn (played by Kathryn Grayson), the daughter of his commanding officer, who has similarly put her singing career on hold in order to serve by providing entertainment for the troops. Unusually for this type of a film (and for this era of Hollywood), the character Kathryn has only recently met her father for the first time since she was a baby, her parents having divorced. A related subplot has Kathryn conniving to get her parents (played by John Boles and Mary Astor) to reconcile. During the first part of the film, Grayson sings several numbers and Kelly performs one of his most famous routines, dancing with a mop as a partner.
