It is regarded as the fist sceneggiata film and as a prototype for the genre. It was shot in Cetara, Province of Salerno.
Synopsis
Andrea Staiano est un jeune homme de Cetara qui finit en prison, piégé par le boss napolitain Enrico Cecere. Après sept ans de détention, il est libéré et retourne chez lui. Avec l'aide de son ami Pietro, il arme un bateau de pêche qui lui permet de gagner honnêtement sa vie. Cependant, l'ombre de la camorra plane sur lui. Angela, la compagne de Cecere, l'informe que sa libération anticipée de prison est due à l'intercession de certains notables du milieu du crime organisé et que, en compensation, il devra faire quelques sales boulots. En réalité, le plan de Cecere est de faire éliminer Andrea Staiano qui n'aime pas de travailler pour lui.Actors

The film opens in 1900 as Roberto Colombo, an Italian-American attorney living in the Little Italy section of New York City, is killed by gangsters as he meets with a police officer to give information about an attempt to extort money from him. His widow and son return to Italy where his widow dies. In 1908, his son Giovanni Colombo (Gene Kelly) returns to New York City, determined to conduct a vendetta against the men who killed his father. He meets up with childhood friend Isabella Gomboli (Teresa Celli) and police detective Louis Lorelli (J. Carrol Naish), both of whom try to dissuade him.

The film, set in California, opens with Cosmo Vittelli (Ben Gazzara) making the final payment on a longstanding gambling debt to a sleazy loanshark (played by the film's producer Al Ruban). To celebrate his long-anticipated freedom, burlesque club owner Vittelli has an expensive night out with his three favorite dancers ("Margo", "Rachael" and "Sherry"). The evening culminates in a poker game in which Vittelli loses $23,000, returning him to the debtor's position he had just left. Using the debt as leverage, his mob creditors coerce him into agreeing to perform a "hit" on a rival. Vittelli is led to believe that his target is a small-time criminal of minor consequence, the Chinese bookie of the film's title; but in fact, he is the boss of the Chinese mafia, "the heaviest cat on the West Coast." Vittelli manages to kill the man and several of his bodyguards, but is severely wounded before escaping.
