This was Cimino's first film after the infamous failure of Heaven's Gate (1980). Year of the Dragon is a New York crime drama and an exploration of gangs, the illegal drug trade, ethnicity, racism, and stereotypes.
Synopsis
Stanley White (Rourke) is a decorated police captain and Vietnam War veteran assigned to New York City's Chinatown, where he makes it his personal mission to come down hard on Chinese organized crime.Actors

In an Italian neighborhood of Greenwich Village, cousins Charlie (Rourke), a maître d' with aspirations of someday owning his own restaurant, and Paulie (Roberts), a schemer who works as a waiter, have expensive tastes but not much money. Paulie gets caught skimming checks, and he and Charlie are both fired. During a shootout against Chinese Triads at a San Francisco dock warehouse, FBI agents John Crawford (Jason Statham) and Tom Lone (Terry Chen) stumble across the notorious assassin Rogue (Jet Li), a former CIA assassin who now works for the Japanese Yakuza. Four days after the events of the first film, detective James Carter is on vacation in Hong Kong, visiting his friend, Hong Kong Police Force Chief Inspector Lee, as he was sent along with Lee in saving the life of the Chinese counsel's daughter in Los Angeles. In 1960, Danny Greene is a union worker at the Cleveland docks. Despite union rules, the workers are exploited by their boss, Jerry. As a result of gambling, Art owes a large amount of money to John Nardi. He asks Greene for help, so Greene visits Nardi and makes him an offer to deal with the debt. Nardi accepts the deal. Jerry warns Greene not to oppose him in the union's upcoming election, and demands half of what Greene has earned from his deal with Nardi. After failing to kill Greene, Jerry loses the union's election. As the new president, Greene improves the working conditions at the docks. He also marries his girlfriend Joan.
