Sparrows (Icelandic: Þrestir) is a 2015 Danish-Icelandic-Croatian film directed by Rúnar Rúnarsson, starring Atli Óskar Fjalarsson, Rakel Björk Björnsdóttir and Ingvar Eggert Sigurðsson. It tells the story of a 16-year-old boy who moves from his mother in Reykjavík to his father in the Icelandic countryside. It was screened in the Contemporary World Cinema section of the 2015 Toronto International Film Festival. It was awarded the Golden Shell at the 63rd San Sebastián International Film Festival.

Synopsis

Ari, 16 ans, vit avec sa mère à Reykjavik lorsqu’il doit soudain retourner vivre chez son père Gunnar, dans la région isolée des fjords, au nord-ouest de l’Islande. Sa relation avec son père n’est pas des plus faciles et ses amis d’enfance semblent avoir bien changé. C’est dans cette situation difficile à laquelle il ne peut échapper qu’Ari devra s’imposer pour trouver sa voie.

In 500 A.D., Hrothgar, king of Denmark, and a group of warriors chase a large and burly man, whom they consider a troll, and his young son, to the edge of deep cliff. The father directs his young son, Grendel, to hide from the attackers' view; whereupon The Danes shoot the father dead, and his dead body plunges onto the beach far below. The Danish king sees the young Grendel, but spares him. Later, Grendel finds his father's body and cuts the head off to take it home. Many years later, the severed (and mummified) head is inside a cave where the boy Grendel has become as large and powerful as his father, and plans revenge.

Nina is the daughter of Ivan, a fierce Croatian patriarch whose family immigrated to Auckland, New Zealand to escape the war.
