This movie is similar to Romeo and Juliet, a tragic love story about two star-crossed lovers. The movie focuses on the love that blossoms between an Indian student (Vikranth) and a Pakistani girl. The movie is essentially about how they must both fight against forces which oppose them. The movie outlines some of the most complex themes and problems that occur between the two state. The story alternates between Vikranth's parents searching for him, while the flashback of the incidence are portrayed along the way. Eventually, near the end, the Pakistani girl suicides thinking her lover is going to die. However, Vikranth turns up to find her dead. This causes him to break down, eventually psychologically affecting him. As time goes on, Vikranth physical appearance changed to the point where no one recognizes him. The movie ends on a sad note, where his own mother fails to recognize her own son.

The recently retired police commissioner of Chennai, Devanathan, begins a new life with his family (which includes his brother and his wife) to keep his past's glory alive. He buys 2 large tea estates in ooty and moves in with his family there. Devanathan's daughter Anita is a teenager, and his son, Ashwin, is a brilliant, troubled young man. One morning, a young man named Daniel arrives with a recommendation letter from a priest to apply for a job as the tea estate manager. Daniel saves Devanthan's life from criminals, and wins the heart of the family. Ashwin drives too fast, frightening the neighborhood children. One day Devanathan gets into an argument with Ashwin, who goes to Daniel's office. Daniel behaves insanely and begins hurting himself. In the hospital Daniel begins dreaming about Abhirami, threatens Ashwin with a knife and cuts himself. Later, Daniel starts a fire in the house. Ashwin is taken to a mental hospital. Daniel disguises himself and spies on Devnathan's hot sister-in-law when she is bathing, thinking it was Devanathan. He lies to her; the brothers become enemies, and the younger brother leaves the house. When riding her bicycle, Anita discovers Daniel's motorcycle and is shocked to see Daniel performing hindu rituals for Abhirami. Daniel claims to be Sakthivel, raised by his elder sister and uncle.

Saravanan's (Dhanush) parents manage to send him to Singapore after having gone through a severe financial drought thinking that he would pay off all their debts as soon as he lands in Singapore. Saravanan finds a job in Singapore through an agent and lands there with high hopes of earning 3 lakh and sending money back to his family. Living in a cramped apartment, Saravanan gets into an argument with a Chinese immigrant there. One day, the immigrant burns Saravanan's passport and Saravanan starts fighting him. The Chinese man is killed inadvertently in the fight. Everyone thinks that Saravanan is responsible, and he flees.

Unending caste discrimination surrounds Puliangulam and Vepangulam villages to such an extent that small incidents lead to shedding of blood to very large extents. Under such circumstances, Sakthivel (Simbu), son of Puliangulam Periyasamy (Raj Kiran), falls in love with Angel Devi (Sonia Agarwal), daughter of Vepangulam Soosai (Nazar). As Soosai comes to know of the issue and that his daughter is also in love with Sakthivel, he opposes the affair and decides to send Angel to a convent to become a Nun. Unable to disobey her father’s words, Angel decides to let go her love and become a nun. She does not change her mind, even after everyone comes to know the truth that she is not Soosai’s real daughter. Just as arrangements are made for the final procedures for her to become a nun, there comes an opposition following which the story tells whether the two lovers unite.
