Synopsis
Juin 1880. Depuis deux ans, Vincent Van Gogh (Gaëtan Wenders) partage le quotidien difficile des mineurs du Borinage. Il s'exerce au dessin mais plonge un peu plus chaque jour dans la déprime. Après avoir rendu visite à son amie Laplèbe (Françoise Oriane), il réalise que, contrairement aux pontifes qui l'ont excommunié, la foule, elle, le plébiscite. Une graine de tournesol qu'il a semée par hasard se met à germer, et sa vocation de peintre devient pour lui une évidence.Actors

Nello is a young boy whose mother died when he was a child. He lives with his grandfather, Jehan Daas (Jack Warden). They live a poor existence, eking out a living delivering milk. On the way home they find a Bouvier des Flandres dog beaten and left on the side of the path for dead. Nursed back to health, this working dog of Flanders becomes Nello's companion throughout the movie.

Michelangelo Buonarroti, a sculptor from Florence, is first commissioned to craft the Pope's tomb in Rome. Vincent van Gogh's obsessive devotion to his art engulfs, consumes, and finally destroys him. The apostate religious leaders do not like his zeal for God and they frown on his social activism and care for the poor in a coal mining town. He returns home to his father's house where he is rejected by a woman he obsessively loves, takes up with a prostitute who leaves because he is too poor, and discovers painting, which he pursues while agonizing that his vision exceeds his ability to execute. His brother, Theo van Gogh, provides financial and moral support, while Vincent lives off and on with the critical Paul Gauguin. Vincent begins experiencing hallucinations and seizures and voluntarily commits himself to a mental institution. He signs himself out, and with Theo's help, returns to a rural area to paint, where he ultimately shoots himself in despair of never being able to put what he sees on canvas.
