Synopsis
James (Niven), the Duke of Brampton and the richest man in England, is so trusted by King Charles II (Sanders), he is able to have two of the King's loyal friends executed for treason. The second is the father of Lady Mary (Blyth). She travels from France to London to seek justice. While there, she meets Michael Dermott (Purdom), a soldier who fought to restore Charles to the throne.Actors

Helga Ohlin (Greta Garbo) is an illegitimate child raised in an abusive home. After the end of World War I, Australian soldier Jocko Wilson (Charles Laughton) admires the spirit of a destitute Belgian orphan who fights a larger boy. He feeds the child, whom he names "Nipper", and the boy's younger sister Mary. When he receives orders to go home, he gets his friend Ginger Gaffney (Clyde Cook) to smuggle the pair aboard their ship. Then, realizing he knows nothing about raising children, he proposes to his singer girlfriend Aggie Dawlins (Binnie Barnes). She accepts. However, he gets drunk and is nearly arrested; in the confusion, he forgets and sails home without her.

Arathea Manning a perdu l'ouïe lors d'une épidémie de scarlatine chez les enfants à qui elle enseigne. Claire Tree, une danseuse de revue, est amoureuse depuis longtemps de Clayton, millionnaire local. Elle le rencontre à l'hôtel Peacock Alley à New York.
