A personal favorite of Quentin Tarantino, the film was re-released in 1996 under Tarantino's Rolling Thunder Pictures label. This version of the film features a commentary by both Hill and Tarantino. The film's tagline is "So Easy to Kill, So Hard to Love."

Blossom (Pam Grier), a buxom bad girl, is the rough-and-ready girlfriend of a radical guerrilla leader, Django (Sid Haig). She rather keeps her relationship a secret, but is also quick to start a fight without knowing it. However, when Django's mercenary friends itch for some female companionship, she softens and the two devise a plan to liberate the inmates of a local women's prison. A woman named Terry (Anitra Ford), a social climber, ends up in the prison herself because of Blossom and Django's earlier robbery. She is now forced to deal with crazy inmates, gay guards, and torture of the cage. Terry, Blossom, and Django (who busted in by seducing Rocco, one of the guards) eventually come together to face off against the warden Zappa (Andrés Centenera) to stage an explosive breakout.

Howard Thorne is a rapist in Los Angeles: he meets women at work and at parties or he sees them walking down the street, and he follows them, terrifies them, and assaults them. In order to write an article on how cheerleading demeans women, titled The Swinging Cheerleaders, giving the movie its name, a reporter for a college newspaper infiltrates the cheerleading squad. While doing so, she uncovers unscrupulous dealings; the coach and dean are in cahoots in rigging football games to favor betting spreads the statistics professor, who is also the bookie, arranges. Later the statistics professor turns against the coach and dean as they turn against their star quarterback who they want to convince to throw the game for a big payoff. But when confronted, the quarterback refuses on principle and is arrested by University Police who plant a joint on him as they carry out the deans ultimatum. The movie endorses defiance of authority, and questions love and virginity.

Three children of the Merrye family live in a decaying rural mansion with their guardian and chauffeur, Bruno (Chaney).
