The film, Billie Holiday’s screen debut, was directed by Fred Waller and distributed by Paramount Pictures.
Symphony in Black represents a landmark in musical, cultural, and entertainment history as well as significant progress in Ellington’s own biography. It a member of the first generation of non-classically arranged orchestral scores and perhaps most importantly, one of the first films written by an African-American describing African-American life to reach wide distribution.

Lewellen lives with her stern, religious grandmother, Grannie, who has taken it upon herself to raise the girl, as neither of Lewellen's parents can provide her a stable home. Her father, Lou, loves her and tries to please her, giving her gifts such as Elvis Presley recordings. Although he battles with alcoholism, he tries his best to give Lewellen a stable home. He even tries to provide a motherly figure in Lewellen's life by dating a mysterious girlfriend, Ellen, who promised one night to rescue Lewellen from life in the rural South should the relationship falter. We later learn that Ellen is in fact Lewellen's aunt, her mother's sister.

Following on from the events in the late 1950s/early '60s of That'll Be the Day, the characters Jim Maclaine, Jeanette and J.D. have moved into the mid '60s/early '70s and the growing career of aspiring rock star MacLaine. MacLaine has assembled a group of musicians and formed the band the Stray Cats, he seeks out his old friend Mike to become the band’s road manager. Mike acquires a new van, accommodation and a recording session for the group. MacLaine soon becomes a massive star and is plunged into the centre of media attention. He indulges in casual sex and heavy drug use and the film documents the detrimental effects of this success on MacLaine and his relationship with his friends and colleagues. In particular, MacLaine’s long-standing friendship with manager Mike is now soured by money and success.

The quiet life of the young Elena (Ninón Sevilla), changes dramatically when her mother runs off with her lover, causing the suicide of her father. Alone and without resources, she emigrated to Ciudad Juárez where unsuccessfully looking for work. On the verge of starvation, Elena agrees to work with Lucio (Tito Junco), suspecting that his offer is a trap for prostitution. She ends up dancing in the cabaret of Rosaura (Andrea Palma), a woman who leads a double life: six months a year she oversees her brothel in Juarez, and the other six months she is a respectable society lady of Guadalajara. Rosaura abused and deeply humiliated Elena, who ends up running away from her with the help of Lucio, only to have to flee the city when Lucio gets involved in an assault and ends up in prison. Elena decides to start a new life working as a showgirl in Guadalajara. There she meets Mario (Ruben Rojo), a handsome young man who falls for her. Elena accepts his marriage proposal, only to discover, through a bitter twist of fate, that Rosaura is the mother of Mario. Elena decides to continue with her plans as a way of torturing Rosaura and avenge all the evil that caused her. But Lucio escape from prison, complicating the Elena riot situation.

Jyotiba, a tamasha conductor of a popular group enters in a competition against another group led by Raghoo. The competition is a musical Question-Answer, with the looser having to wear lugada for the rest of his life. Jyotiba loses the competition and has to face humiliation due to which he and his wife succumb to death. To avenge the death of her parents, their little daughter Anu decides to excel in the art form. She takes the vow to defeat Raghoo and make him wear lugada. After 12 years, she grows into a young attractive woman (now played by Jayshree Gadkar) and finally decides to enter the competition with her troupe.
