Tharlo est un film de Pema Tseden. Le film est adapté de l’une des nouvelles de Pema Tseden, dont le film porte le titre : Tharlo (ཐར་ལོ་,《塔洛》).

Il est présenté en sélection Horizons (Orizzonti) à la Mostra de Venise 2015, puis au Festival international des cinémas d'Asie de Vesoul 2016 où il remporte le Cyclo d'or et le prix INALCO du Festival international des cinémas d'Asie de Vesoul pour son film Tharlo.

Synopsis

Tharlo, un berger âgé d'environ 40 ans, a une telle mémoire qu'il peut réciter Le petit livre rouge. Il vit de l'élevage de centaines de moutons dans les montagnes du Tibet. Quand il se déplace à la ville pour faire établir une carte d'identité, sa vie bascule. Sa plus grande ambition est de venir en aide aux autres mais son idéal va s'effondrer à son arrivée en ville où il rencontre une jeune fille.

Alors que la Coupe du monde de football 1998 est disputée en France, Palden et Nyima, deux jeunes tibétains ayant fui leur pays arrivent dans un monastère bouddhiste au nord de l'Inde. Ils y reçoivent leur ordination à la vie monastique, mais celle-ci va rapidement laisser place à la passion du football. Palden se retrouve entraîné par Orgyen, son camarade de chambre, à regarder la nuit le match des quarts de finale dans le village voisin. Sur le chemin du retour, ils sont pris sur le fait par le geko, le maître de discipline du monastère, qui les punit. Avec l’approche de la finale, Orgyen réussit, non sans peine, à autoriser la diffusion de la finale de la Coupe du Monde au monastère. Ne possédant cependant pas de télévision, une course contre la montre commence afin de récolter assez d’argent pour en louer une. Après de nombreux obstacles, les résidents du monastère réussissent finalement par regarder la finale France-Brésil tous ensemble.

Tashi (Shawn Ku) began his training as a Buddhist monk at the age of five. Milarépa naquit au Tibet, au XI siècle, au sein d’une famille de riches marchands. À sa mort, son père confie l'héritage de la famille à son frère jusqu’à l'entrée de Milarépa dans la vie adulte. La foule en colère le poursuit. Milarépa trouve refuge auprès d’un moine, et tandis que sa mère se rejouit de la vengeance accomplie, il est rongé par le remords. C’est alors qu’il reçoit un conseil qui changera sa vie : « Les ennemis naissent de ton esprit; Pour les vaincre, cesse les actions négatives, Cultive les actions positives, et Maîtrise ton esprit ».
