Thavasi (Tamil : தவசி) is a 2001 Tamil action film directed by Udaya Shankar starring Vijayakanth in dual role, with Soundarya, Prathyusha, Jayasudha and Nassar playing other pivotal roles. The film was remade in Kannada as Mallikarjuna with V. Ravichandran.
Synopsis
Thavasi (Vijaykanth) is an influential, do-good landlord in a small village, who commands respect from village. Thavasi and his wife (Jayasudha) arrange for the marriage of their son Boopathi (Vijaykanth) with Priyadarshini/Priya (Soundarya). Sankarapandi (Nassar) who had killed Thavasi's sister, after marrying her wants to marry his daughter (whom he had with his second wife) to Boopathi. Thanagarasu who is accused of stealing jewels commits suicide. Thangarasu's mother questions Thavasi's judgement. Thavasi decides to send Bhoopathi to his home. Maragathammal hates Boopathi and treats him like a dirt though Boopathi tolerates it. Sankarapandi wants his daughter to wed Bhoopathi. Boopathi unknown to Maragathammal saves Thanagarasu's dumb sister from Kottaiperumal and also reforms Kaarmegam which Karmegam reveals to Maragathammal in Boopathi's marriage. In the end, a goon who was supposed to be dumb blurts out the truth that Sankarapandi was responsible for the temple theft and he murdered Thanagarasu and made it to look like suicide. In the end, Bhoopathi unites with Priyadarshini.Actors

The story is set in the backdrop of rural India. In the South Indian kingdom of Cholapuram Paalayam in the year 1771, Raja Mokkaiyappar and his queen, Rajamatha Bhavani Ammaiyar are desperate for a child, as all their previous twenty-two children have died at birth. Unknown to them, Bhavani's brother, Sangilimayan, who is also the Rajaguru (Chief Minister), is responsible for the death of their children. Sangilimayan is shocked to see that his sister has given birth to twins. Before informing the king about the birth, he calls the palace astrologer, Chinnavadayaan, who predicts that the elder twin will be incapable of making decisions on his own while the younger one will be smarter. Sangilimayan orders the palace doctor, Kailasakaruppan, to kill the younger one, but Chinnavadayaan tells Sangilimayan that his actions would not be good for the kingdom. Instead, Sangilimayan orders the palace doctor to abandon the child in a nearby river. The elder child is named Pulikecei XXIII. Maragathavalli, Kailasakaruppan's childless wife, rescues the abandoned child from the river, and the couple decides to raise him as their own, naming him Ukraputhan.

Saktivelu (Kamal Haasan) returns home to his father, Periya Thevar’s (Sivaji Ganesan) village in Tamil Nadu, after completing his education in London. Much to his father’s annoyance, he brings his westernized girlfriend (Gautami) with him to meet his family. Periya Thevar is deeply offended since it is tradition that the family elders choose the youngster's spouses.
