Synopsis
Anna Bronsky est professeure de violon au Conservatoire. Contre l’avis de ses collègues, elle impose l’admission d’un élève , en qui elle voit un grand talent. Avec beaucoup d’implication, elle prépare Alexander à l’examen de fin d’année et néglige de ce fait son jeune fils Jonas, lui aussi élève violoniste et passionné de hockey sur glace. Elle s’éloigne de plus en plus de son mari, si aimant à son égard, le luthier français Philippe Bronsky . A l’approche de l’audition, Anna pousse Alexander vers des performances de plus en plus exceptionnelles. Le jour décisif, un accident se produit, lourd de conséquences…Actors

The film opens with violinist Roberta Guaspari having been deserted by her US Navy husband and feeling devastated, almost suicidal. Liu Cheng (Liu Peiqi) is a widowed cook making his living in a small southern town in China. His thirteen-year-old son, Liu Xiaochun (Tang Yun), is a violin prodigy. Traude Krueger (Bleibtreu) is working as a piano teacher in a women's prison. While selecting new students, she meets Jenny Von Loeben (Herzsprung). When she tells her she can't take any lessons because her hands are too rough and she is uncooperative, Jenny becomes enraged and almost kills the prison guard, Mütze (Pippig), also one of Krueger's students. Then she starts playing the piano. Krueger listens from the hallway and, impressed by her talent, later offers Jenny lessons, but requires absolute obedience, including eating a sheet of paper. She tells Jenny never to play 'that kind of negro-music' again.
