Synopsis
Bordeaux. Anne n’a pas d’amis, pas d’enfants, pas d’amants, elle est seule, et semble déconnectée du monde. Elle fait semblant de vivre, et traverse sa vie et ses rencontres comme un être désincarné, sans passion. Quelque chose la pousse au contact humain, et quelque chose la retient aussi. In 1607, the Susan Constant sails to the New World from England, carrying British settlers of the Virginia Company. On board are Captain John Smith and the voyage's leader Governor Ratcliffe, who seeks large amounts of gold in the New World to assure a strong position at the British court. Along the way, the Susan Constant is caught in a North Atlantic storm, and Smith saves a young, inexperienced crewmate named Thomas from drowning. In the Powhatan tribe in the New World, Pocahontas, daughter of Chief Powhatan, dreads being possibly wed to Kocoum, a brave warrior whom she sees as too "serious" for her free-spirited personality. Chief Powhatan gives Pocahontas her deceased mother's necklace as a present. Pocahontas, along with her friends, the gluttonous raccoon Meeko and hot-tempered hummingbird Flit, visit Grandmother Willow, a spiritual talking willow tree, and speaks of a possibly prophetic dream involving a spinning arrow, and her confusion regarding what her "path" in life should be. Grandmother Willow then alerts Pocahontas to the arriving British.

The film focuses on 15-year-old Billy Casper, who has little hope in life and is bullied, both at home by his physically and verbally abusive older half-brother, Jud, and at school. He is constantly held to account for some prior run-ins with the police, although he insists that his mischief is behind him. Yet we see evidence of his mischievous side as he carries out his morning newspaper delivery, stealing eggs and milk from milk floats. He has difficulty paying attention in school and is often provoked into tussles with classmates. Billy comes across as an emotionally neglected boy with little self-respect. Billy's father has left the family some time ago, and his mother refers to him in the film as a "hopeless case.

L'histoire du film se passe à l'automne 1946 dans une petite ville provinciale de l'ouest du Kazakhstan soviétique. Ivan Naïdenov, un jeune garçon préadolescent, surnommé Sedoï (c'est-à-dire: le Grisonnant, à cause d'une mèche de cheveux blanche) est un colombophile passionné, au point qu'un jour il capture au risque de sa vie et par inconscience de gamin une colombe blanche arrivée ici on ne sait d'où. Les autres éleveurs amateurs de pigeons de la ville ont tôt fait d'apprendre la nouvelle et certains décident de s'en emparer. Une nuit donc des voleurs viennent prendre la Blanche, ainsi qu'est surnommée la colombe d'Ivan. Celui-ci se met en quête de la retrouver et découvre qu'elle est chez Kolia (dit le Tzigane), une « autorité » chez les colombophiles. Le jeune garçon grâce à sa malice parvient à reprendre son bien, mais comprend que l'oiseau est condamné et le remet en liberté.

Melanie Daniels (Tippi Hedren), a young socialite, meets lawyer Mitch Brenner (Rod Taylor) in a San Francisco bird shop. Middle school student Roy A. Eberhardt (Logan Lerman) has just moved to Florida from Montana. He is mercilessly teased and bullied by Dana Matherson until he accidentally breaks Dana's nose while on the school bus. Because of this, Roy is suspended from riding the school bus for 3 days and must write Dana an apology letter. Roy slowly becomes friends with Beatrice "The Bear" Leep (Brie Larson), and her stepbrother, "Mullet Fingers" (Cody Linley). Meanwhile, someone is responsible for vandalism on a local construction site where a "Mother Paula's Pancake House" restaurant, owned by corrupt CEO Chuck Muckle, is about to be built. In order to catch the vandals and prevent further vandalism, Officer David Delinko (Luke Wilson) has parked his police cruiser on the building site. Delinko falls asleep and an unknown vandal vandalizes the car by spray painting its windows with black spray paint. The next day at breakfast, Roy and his parents read about the spray painted police car. The police chief then gives Delinko a small police scooter to replace the vandalized cruiser.
