Fields plays a dentist whose daughter desires to marry an ice-delivery man. He disapproves of this match, especially after she attempts to elope with her lover. Fields locks her up in an upstairs room, above his dental office, where she proceeds to stamp her feet, causing plaster chunks to fall as he attempts to treat his patients. Various patients with unusual physical traits (a tall "horse"-faced woman, a tiny, heavily bearded man) arrive at the office, and he attempts to use his dental drill on them without any apparent pain killer. With one of his patients (Elise Cavanna), he engages in an intimate wrestling match as he attempts to extract a painful tooth.

John Warfield, un travailleur social, et Guido Garcia, un socialiste radical, créent un refuge à San Francisco pour les personnes en difficulté. Goldie Shepard, dont le père est alcoolique, s'intéresse à leur action et devient la secrétaire de Warfield. Goldie développe une haine envers les riches lorsque son père meurt renversé par une voiture conduite par Lorraine Van Allen, membre de la haute société. Warfield se marie avec Goldie et l'emmène en Angleterre, mais il est choqué par son appétit pour le luxe et décide bientôt de donner son domaine aux pauvres et de retourner à San Francisco. Guido, un ancien prétendant de Goldie, apprend son mariage et la tue avant de se suicider. Warfield épouse Lorraine, et ils transforment le manoir anglais en un refuge pour des enfants.
