A tragi-comedy set against the background of sexual inequality, it traces the amorous adventures of the young Kaddour, whose arranged marriage is intended as a lesson taught to him by his elders. Starring Djilali Ain-Tedeles, it won the prize for Best Cinematography (Allel Yahyaoui) at the 11th FESPACO held at Ouagadougou in 1989.
Synopsis
Dans un village du Sud Oranais. Sidi, vendeur d'étoffes et de vêtements, est polygame. Son fils adoptif, Kaddour, rêveur naïf, devient follement amoureux de l'épouse du cordonnier. Afin de s'octroyer le faveurs de la belle, il exécute un rituel recommandé par un marabout. Les villageois, indisposés par les faits et gestes de Kaddour, contraignent Sidi à le marier au plus vite. Mais la cérémonie est en réalité une farce…Actors

The film chronicles a legal-precedent setting court case that outlawed the kidnapping of child brides in Ethiopia. It tells the story of a 14-year-old girl, Hirut Assefa (based on Aberash Bekele), who is kidnapped on her way home from school and subsequently grabs a rifle and tries to escape, but ends up shooting her would-be husband. In her village, the practice of abduction into marriage is common and one of Ethiopia's oldest traditions. Meaza Ashenafi, the founder of the Ethiopian Women Lawyers Association, arrives from the city to have her team represent Hirut and argue that she acted in self defence.
