Synopsis
Le sympathique et insouciant Grand-Duc d'Abacco est en grande difficulté. Il n'y a plus d'argent pour combler la dette de l'État ; le principal créancier envisage d'exproprier le duc Le mariage avec Olga, grande duchesse de Russie, résoudrait tout, mais une lettre cruciale de cette dernière concernant les fiançailles a été volée. De plus, une bande de révolutionnaires et un homme d'affaires douteux ont d'autres plans concernant le Grand-Duc. Avec l'intrusion de l'aventurier Philipp Collins dans les affaires du Grand-Duc, une série de poursuites effrénées, de complots et de contre-plots commencent.Actors

The film is told in an extended flashback. Lorenz Lubota (Alfred Abel), is a clerk in a minor government office, an aspiring poet, and a member of a family headed by a worrisome mother who has a tense relationship with a daughter, Melanie, whom the mother believes works as a prostitute. One day, while Lorenz is walking to work, a woman (Lya De Putti) driving two white horses hits him in the road, knocking him to the ground. Physically, he is unharmed, but from that point forward, the woman in the carriage (named Veronika) consumes his every thought.

Steyer mène une vie retirée dans les Monts des Géants : avec ses parents, sa seconde épouse Ludmilla et sa fille Ænne née d'un premier mariage, il exploite une mine. Mais Ludmilla n'a épousé Steyer que pour l'argent : elle est soumise au chasseur Lauer, qu'elle continue de voir en secret. Lorsque Steyer découvre son infortune et qu'il surprend Lauer devant la mine, il interroge vivement sa femme. Celle-ci nie tout et lui dit que Lauer vient en réalité voir Ænne ; le soir, elle emmène son mari danser pour lui prouver son amour. Steyer, rentré saoûl, n'a plus qu'une idée : fiancer sa fille Ænne à Lauer, et revendre sa mine. Il s'aperçoit trop tard de sa méprise : sa maison est vendue, Ludmilla a disparu avec Lauer et lorsqu'il s'en retourne vers la mine, ses parents déménagent. Il a tout perdu en l'espace d'une nuit.

The film follows the exploits of film actor Jack Noah (Dreyfuss), who is filming in the small, fictional South American country of Parador when Paradorian President Alfonse Simms suddenly dies of a heart attack. Not wanting to lose his position in power, the president's right-hand man, Roberto Strausmann (Juliá) forces Jack to take the 'role of a lifetime' - that of the dead president, as the two men look so much alike. In the Southeast Asian nation of Shadaloo City, civil war has erupted between the forces of crazed military dictator General M. Bison (Raul Julia) and the Allied Nations, a multinational military force, led by their regional commander, Colonel William F. Guile. Bison has recently captured several A.N. relief workers, and via a live two-way radio broadcast, demands Guile secure a US$20 billion ransom in three days or else face responsibility for the hostages' deaths. Guile refuses and vows to track Bison down, but his assistant, Sergeant Cammy (Kylie Minogue) is only partially able to pinpoint Bison's location to the river-delta region outside the city. One of the hostages is Guile's close friend, Carlos "Charlie" Blanka (Robert Mammone), who Bison orders taken to his lab for his captive witch doctor, Dhalsim (Roshan Seth), to turn into the first of his supersoldiers. Though Charlie is severely disfigured by the procedure, Dhalsim secretly alters his cerebral programming to maintain Charlie's humanity.

The King (Jean Marais) promises his dying Queen that after her death he will only marry a woman as beautiful and virtuous as she. Pressed by his advisers to remarry and produce an heir, he comes to the conclusion that the only way to fulfil his promise is to marry his own daughter, the Princess (Catherine Deneuve). Following the advice of her godmother, the Lilac Fairy (Delphine Seyrig), the Princess demands a series of seemingly impossible nuptial gifts, in the hope that her father will be forced to give up his plans of marriage. However, the King succeeds in providing her with dresses the colour of the weather, of the moon and of the sun, and finally with the skin of a magic donkey that excretes jewels, the source of his kingdom's wealth. Donning the donkey skin, the Princess flees her father's kingdom to avoid the incestuous marriage.
