Steyer mène une vie retirée dans les Monts des Géants : avec ses parents, sa seconde épouse Ludmilla et sa fille Ænne née d'un premier mariage, il exploite une mine. Mais Ludmilla n'a épousé Steyer que pour l'argent : elle est soumise au chasseur Lauer, qu'elle continue de voir en secret. Lorsque Steyer découvre son infortune et qu'il surprend Lauer devant la mine, il interroge vivement sa femme. Celle-ci nie tout et lui dit que Lauer vient en réalité voir Ænne ; le soir, elle emmène son mari danser pour lui prouver son amour. Steyer, rentré saoûl, n'a plus qu'une idée : fiancer sa fille Ænne à Lauer, et revendre sa mine. Il s'aperçoit trop tard de sa méprise : sa maison est vendue, Ludmilla a disparu avec Lauer et lorsqu'il s'en retourne vers la mine, ses parents déménagent. Il a tout perdu en l'espace d'une nuit.

The film is told in an extended flashback. Lorenz Lubota (Alfred Abel), is a clerk in a minor government office, an aspiring poet, and a member of a family headed by a worrisome mother who has a tense relationship with a daughter, Melanie, whom the mother believes works as a prostitute. One day, while Lorenz is walking to work, a woman (Lya De Putti) driving two white horses hits him in the road, knocking him to the ground. Physically, he is unharmed, but from that point forward, the woman in the carriage (named Veronika) consumes his every thought.

Morgan Leafy is a British diplomat and works in the small African state of Kinjanja, in the process of decolonisation. Financial disaster looms for Grand Fenwick when the current vintage of its only export, wine, starts exploding in would-be consumers' faces. Prime Minister Mountjoy (Ron Moody) decides to ask the United States for a loan, ostensibly to fund its entry in the race to the Moon, but actually to save the duchy (and install modern plumbing so he can have a hot bath). The devious politician knows that the Americans will not believe him, but will consider the half million dollars he is asking for to be cheap propaganda supporting their hollow call for international co-operation in space. He is delighted when they send him double the amount as an outright gift. The Soviets, not wishing to be one-upped by their Cold War rivals, deliver an obsolete rocket. Mountjoy asks resident scientist Professor Kokintz (David Kosoff) to arrange a small explosion during the "launch" of their lunar rocket to make it look like they have actually spent the money as intended.

The King (Jean Marais) promises his dying Queen that after her death he will only marry a woman as beautiful and virtuous as she. Pressed by his advisers to remarry and produce an heir, he comes to the conclusion that the only way to fulfil his promise is to marry his own daughter, the Princess (Catherine Deneuve). Following the advice of her godmother, the Lilac Fairy (Delphine Seyrig), the Princess demands a series of seemingly impossible nuptial gifts, in the hope that her father will be forced to give up his plans of marriage. However, the King succeeds in providing her with dresses the colour of the weather, of the moon and of the sun, and finally with the skin of a magic donkey that excretes jewels, the source of his kingdom's wealth. Donning the donkey skin, the Princess flees her father's kingdom to avoid the incestuous marriage.
